D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser renamed a street in front of the White House \u201cBlack Lives Matter Plaza\u201d and had the slogan painted on the asphalt in massive yellow letters, a pointed salvo in her escalating dispute with President Trump over control of D.C. streets.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

City officials said the actions Friday were meant to honor demonstrators who are urging changes in law enforcement practices after the\u00a0killing of George Floyd, an unarmed black man,\u00a0<\/a>in the custody of Minneapolis police.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThere was a dispute this week about whose street it is, and Mayor Bowser wanted to make it abundantly clear whose street it is and honor the peaceful demonstrators who assembled Monday night,\u201d said John Falcicchio, the mayor\u2019s chief of staff.\u00a0[WaPo<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

President Trump is best served by ignoring this salvo, but generally he sees such actions as signaling weakness. I expect at some point we’ll see some sort of action. Certainly there will be some screaming and abuse on Twitter from the President. He’ll probably claim she had no legal right to do so.<\/p>\n

And then the racists that rally behind the President will demand action as well. Perhaps they’ll resort to vandalism. Maybe they’ll get caught.<\/p>\n

And the President will look weak again. After silence – and possibly better than – his best response would be to pull a Clinton and embrace the reality. But I doubt he’ll do that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
