{"id":28911,"date":"2020-06-04T12:35:39","date_gmt":"2020-06-04T17:35:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=28911"},"modified":"2020-06-04T12:35:39","modified_gmt":"2020-06-04T17:35:39","slug":"adios-rep-king","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2020\/06\/04\/adios-rep-king\/","title":{"rendered":"Adios, Rep King"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In all likelihood, Rep Steve King (R-IA) is making his last appearance in the pages of <strong><em>UMB<\/em><\/strong> today, as he lost his primary run for the <em><strong>GOP<\/strong><\/em> nomination to his position to represent Iowa&#8217;s 4th district on Tuesday:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a title=\"Iowa State Senate\" href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Iowa_State_Senate\">State Sen.<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Randy Feenstra\" href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Randy_Feenstra\">Randy Feenstra<\/a>\u00a0(R) unseated\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"U.S. House\" href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/U.S._House\">Rep.<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Steve King (Iowa)\" href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Steve_King_(Iowa)\">Steve King<\/a>\u00a0(R) in the Republican primary for Iowa&#8217;s 4th congressional district on June 2, 2020. Feenstra received 45.7% of the vote to King&#8217;s 36.0%. None of the three other candidates received more than 10% of the vote. Local and national media identified incumbent\u00a0<a title=\"Steve King (Iowa)\" href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Steve_King_(Iowa)\">Steve King<\/a>\u00a0(R) and top fundraiser\u00a0<a title=\"Randy Feenstra\" href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Randy_Feenstra\">Randy Feenstra<\/a>\u00a0(R) as leading candidates. A May 2020 article in\u00a0<i>Politico<\/i> described the primary as King&#8217;s &#8220;toughest race since he was elected to the House almost 20 years ago.&#8221;\u00a0<em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Iowa's_4th_Congressional_District_election,_2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ballotpedia<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Rep King, who lost all of his committee assignments following some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/03\/19\/us\/politics\/steve-king-white-society.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unfortunate remarks<\/a> concerning race, was the master of the passive-aggressive defense, which consists of &#8220;Hey, why are you misinterpreting my remarks?!&#8221; It appears the 4th district GOP voters were either tired of those remarks, or his loss of influence in matters agricultural. He&#8217;s also fairly bitter, but I shall omit those remarks, as they play the victimhood card.<\/p>\n<p>Feenstra is a doctrinaire Republican:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I am truly humbled by the outpouring of support over the past 17 months that made tonight possible and I thank Congressman King for his decades of public service,&#8221; Feenstra said in a statement. &#8220;As we turn to the General Election, I will remain focused on my plans to deliver results for the families, farmers and communities of Iowa. But first, we must make sure this seat doesn&#8217;t land in the hands of Nancy Pelosi and her liberal allies in Congress. Tomorrow, we get back to work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Feenstra had won marquee endorsements and financial support from conservative groups in Washington, including the Chamber of Commerce and the National Right to Life Committee. He told voters he wanted a seat on the House Agriculture Committee &#8212; something King no longer has. And he boasted a much greater campaign war chest,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/forms\/C00693663\/1399942\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reporting over $415,000 on\u00a0<\/a>hand at the end of March compared\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/forms\/C00373563\/1400632\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to fewer than $30,000 for King<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The 4th District needs a seat at the table &#8212; an effective conservative voice,&#8221; Feenstra said in a recent debate. &#8220;Our district, our President, deserve an effective conservative leader in Congress.&#8221;<span style=\"font-style: italic;\">\u00a0[<\/span><a style=\"color: #ff4b33; font-style: italic;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/06\/02\/politics\/steve-king-iowa-primary-election\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>CNN<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">]<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While the invocation of the opposing Party&#8217;s speaker as a boogieman is fairly traditional in political hoo-rah, support from conservative organizations and his support for the President mark Feenstra as another far-right Republican.
