Does a dangerous, newly observed tendency to blood clotting transform some mild cases into life-threatening emergencies? Is an overzealous immune response behind the worst cases, suggesting treatment with immune-suppressing drugs could help? What explains the startlingly low blood oxygen that some physicians are reporting in patients who nonetheless are not gasping for breath? \u201cTaking a systems approach may be beneficial as we start thinking about therapies,\u201d says Nilam Mangalmurti, a pulmonary intensivist at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Will we be seeing some form of chemotherapy to suppress or inhibit the immune system?This is starting to feel like a blood disease. <strong><em>WaPo<\/em><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/news\/2020\/04\/how-does-coronavirus-kill-clinicians-trace-ferocious-rampage-through-body-brain-toes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published<\/a> this article yesterday on blood clots; my Arts Editor exclaimed it sounds like &#8220;reverse-Ebola&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Reports of <strong>strokes<\/strong> in the young and middle-aged \u2014 not just at Mount Sinai, but also in many other hospitals in communities hit hard by the novel coronavirus \u2014 are the latest twist in our evolving understanding of the disease it causes. The numbers of those affected are small but nonetheless remarkable because they challenge how doctors understand the virus. Even as it has infected nearly 2.8 million people worldwide and killed about 195,000 as of Friday, its biological mechanisms continue to elude top scientific minds.
