{"id":28146,"date":"2020-03-29T15:54:51","date_gmt":"2020-03-29T20:54:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=28146"},"modified":"2020-03-29T15:54:51","modified_gmt":"2020-03-29T20:54:51","slug":"the-recalcitrant-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2020\/03\/29\/the-recalcitrant-one\/","title":{"rendered":"The Recalcitrant One"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s a little sad that I must immediately be suspicious of the President when he says something, but when he voiced negative comments about the efforts of <em><strong>GM<\/strong><\/em> to produce ventilators on an emergency basis, the red flags went up:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOur negotiations with GM regarding its ability to supply ventilators have been productive, but our fight against the virus is too urgent to allow the give-and-take of the contracting process to continue to run its normal course,\u201d Trump said in a statement. \u201cGM was wasting time. Today\u2019s action will help ensure the quick production of ventilators that will save American lives.\u201d\u00a0<em>[<strong><a style=\"outline-width: 0px !important; user-select: auto !important;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/trump-raises-prospect-of-ordering-gm-ford-to-manufacture-ventilators\/2020\/03\/27\/92f82db6-7043-11ea-aa80-c2470c6b2034_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WaPo<\/a><\/strong>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That action, taken on Friday, was Trump&#8217;s first invocation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Defense_Production_Act_of_1950\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Defense Production Act<\/strong><\/a>., used to order <strong><em>GM<\/em><\/strong> to produce ventilators (in concert with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/money\/companies\/gm-to-partner-with-medical-device-company-to-boost-ventilator-production\/ar-BB11tCtn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Ventec Life Systems<\/em><\/strong><\/a>), but then he followed it up:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAs usual with \u2018this\u2019 General Motors, things just never seem to work out,\u201d Trump tweeted. \u201cThey said they were going to give us 40,000 much needed Ventilators, \u2018very quickly\u2019. Now they are saying it will only be 6000, in late April, and they want top dollar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlways a mess with Mary B.,\u201d he added, referring to Barra, the company\u2019s chief executive.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And CEO Barra&#8217;s response?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>GM responded that i\u2019ts been \u201cworking around the clock for weeks to meet this urgent need\u201d and that its commitment to build the ventilators \u201chas never wavered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are proud to stand with other American companies and our skilled employees to meet the needs of this global pandemic,\u201d said Mary Barra, GM\u2019s chairman and CEO.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At this juncture, independents are wondering what&#8217;s going on, while the Trump cultists will be stirred up since, well, their Great Leader doesn&#8217;t like <em><strong>GM<\/strong><\/em>. So what&#8217;s going on? Aaron Blake provides enlightenment the next day:<\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">While discussing why he invoked the Defense Production Act on Friday to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/trump-raises-prospect-of-ordering-gm-ford-to-manufacture-ventilators\/2020\/03\/27\/92f82db6-7043-11ea-aa80-c2470c6b2034_story.html?tid=lk_inline_manual_13&amp;itid=lk_inline_manual_13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">force General Motors to build ventilators<\/a>, he acknowledged what has been a long-standing beef with the auto company: the closure of a plant in Lordstown, Ohio.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">Remarkably, Trump brought that up even as he was asked specifically why he had singled GM out for this step before any other company. He dismissed the idea that it was about cost and instead cited GM\u2019s decisions on where to house its plants.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">\u201cWe don\u2019t want to think too much about cost when we\u2019re talking about this. This is not cost,\u201d Trump said. \u201cI wasn\u2019t happy where General Motors built plants in other locations over the years. .\u2009.\u2009. And so I didn\u2019t go into it with a very favorable view. I was extremely unhappy with Lordstown, Ohio \u2014 where they left Lordstown, Ohio, in the middle of an auto boom because we had 17 car companies coming in and then they were leaving one plant in Ohio.\u201d<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2020\/03\/27\/trump-suggests-personal-grievances-factor-into-his-coronavirus-decisions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>WaPo<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Aaron has more, but it&#8217;s become clear this is a two-fer for President Trump.<\/p>\n<p>First, he casts blame on someone else for his blundering response to the <strong>COVID-19<\/strong> pandemic. Every time a reporter brings it up, he&#8217;ll point at <em><strong>GM<\/strong><\/em> (and <strong><em>Ford<\/em><\/strong>, it turns out) and blame them for not supplying cheap ventilators.<\/p>\n<p>And the reporters won&#8217;t just laugh at him and tell him to try again, which is the best course of action with an inveterate liar.<\/p>\n<p>Second, he gets to cast <strong><em>GM<\/em><\/strong> and Big Auto as the enemies of the Trump cult.
