{"id":27999,"date":"2020-03-18T13:58:36","date_gmt":"2020-03-18T18:58:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=27999"},"modified":"2020-03-18T13:58:36","modified_gmt":"2020-03-18T18:58:36","slug":"dont-do-what-we-do-do-what-we-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2020\/03\/18\/dont-do-what-we-do-do-what-we-say\/","title":{"rendered":"Don&#8217;t Do What We Do, Do What We Say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Senator McConnell (R-KY), leader of the Senate but in trouble in his reelection race, is looking for a bit of leeway from his probable opponent:<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell\u2019s campaign called on a potential Democratic opponent \u2014 former Marine Corps pilot Amy McGrath \u2014 to stop running political advertisements during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAmy McGrath\u2019s decision to blanket the airwaves with deceitful ads during the coronavirus outbreak is tasteless and shameful,\u201d said McConnell campaign manager Kevin Golden. \u201cAs Kentuckians adjust their daily lives and schedules to help stem the outbreak, the last thing they need to see on TV is negative political advertising. The McGrath campaign must stop airing all of their advertisements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McGrath has been running advertisements in Kentucky since July, when she first announced her campaign for U.S. Senate. Recently, she has been running national ads on MSNBC and Fox News in an effort to boost her already prolific fundraising totals.\u00a0<em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kentucky.com\/news\/politics-government\/article241231726.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Lexington Herald-Leader<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, in Ohio &#8230;<\/p>\n<section class=\"page-content__row page-content__row--story mobile-spacing\">\n<div class=\"container container--story story-layout--fluid-fixed\">\n<div class=\"container__column container__column--story\">\n<div class=\"container__row container__row--story story-layout--fixed-fluid\">\n<div class=\"container__column container__column--story center-horizontally\">\n<div class=\"story-text\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\" story-text__paragraph\">Arkansas Republican Tom Cotton, a freshman senator up for reelection in November, launched a highly unusual new TV ad this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\" story-text__paragraph\">The content was standard, pro-Trump, anti-Democrat fare. What was very atypical was that it aired hundreds of miles from his home state, in Ohio.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"story-enhancement\"><\/aside>\n<p class=\" story-text__paragraph\">As it turns out, the ad had nothing to do with Cotton\u2019s current campaign, and everything to do with the one he\u2019s eyeing four years from now \u2014 for the White House. He and Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) are running commercials aimed at raising their profiles in key electoral battlegrounds and \u2014 perhaps more important \u2014 ingratiating themselves with President Donald Trump and his supporters, who could prove critical in any future Republican presidential primary contest.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"page-content__row page-content__row--story main-section\">\n<div class=\"container container--story story-layout--fixed-fluid\">\n<div class=\"container__column container__column--story\">\n<div class=\"container__row container__row--story story-layout--fluid-fixed\">\n<div class=\"container__column container__column--story center-horizontally\">\n<div class=\"story-text\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\" story-text__paragraph\">The twin offensives underscore how the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/02\/28\/2024-republicans-trump-cpac-117991\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2024 Republican presidential primary is already underway<\/a> even as Trump is battling for a second term. Republicans with future national aspirations are hitting early primary states, jockeying to win the favor of major donors, and auditioning before conservative activists.\u00a0<em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/03\/14\/cotton-scott-trump-128972\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Politico<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Republican message is <strong>decidedly mixed<\/strong>. No campaigning for the 2020 election, but yes for 2024?<\/p>\n<p>I might also add that it used to be a conservative value that candidates for higher office &#8211; for any sort of promotion, really &#8211; show some sort of competency and accomplishment before hand. This is no longer true, it appears. Cotton, from what little he&#8217;s done, is a real dick. Scott, also a freshman Senator, has not done much in the positive column that I have seen. On a negative note, though, there&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2019\/02\/02\/wisdom-from-yestercentury-ctd-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this deceptive little number,<\/a> which I felt compelled to rip into little pieces a couple of years ago.<\/p>\n<p>But Senator &#8220;Moscow Mitch&#8221; just makes me laugh.
