From author Ivan Oransky&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/embargowatch.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/23\/why-do-blog-on-embargoes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first post way back when<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If you\u2019re unfamiliar with embargoes: You\u2019ve probably noticed that every major news organization \u2014 including mine, Reuters\u00a0 \u2014 seems to publish stories on particular studies all at once. Embargoes are why.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of journals, using services such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/eurekalert.org\/\">Eurekalert.org<\/a>, release material to journalists before it\u2019s officially published. Reporters agree not to publish anything based on those studies until that date, and in return they get more time to read the studies and obtain comments.<\/p>\n<p>That would seem to be a good thing for science and health journalism, much of which is reliant on journals for news because it\u2019s peer-reviewed \u2014 in other words, it\u2019s not just a researcher shouting from a mountaintop \u2014 and punctuates the scientific process with \u201cnews events.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vincent Kiernan doesn\u2019t agree.\u00a0In his book,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.press.uillinois.edu\/books\/catalog\/97yhb3wm9780252030970.html\">Embargoed Science<\/a><\/em>, Kiernan argues that embargoes make journalists lazy, always chasing that week\u2019s big studies. They become addicted to the journal hit, afraid to divert their attention to more original and enterprising reporting because their editors will give them grief for not covering that study everyone else seems to have covered.<\/p>\n<p>But even if embargoes are a necessary evil, they\u2019re not uniform, and how each organization deals with them provides case studies in some of the chinks in embargoes\u2019 armor.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As a fan of obscure facts, it&#8217;s interesting to see what other people think is worth blogging about.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Embargo Watch has been around for a decade and more.
