Disgraced televangelist Jim Bakker wants you to know that, as long as you\u2019ve got his branded \u201cSilver Solution\u201d on your side, the novel coronavirus epidemic sweeping the globe doesn\u2019t stand a chance. If only those pesky federal regulators hadn\u2019t gotten in the way!<\/p>\n

Bakker, a once-mainstream Evangelical disgraced by a sex scandal and a\u00a0fraud conviction<\/a>, is now best known for his relentless\u00a0merchandizing<\/a>, including with his\u00a0buckets of freeze-dried food<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And with viewers\u2019 virus concerns peaking last month, he recently took to marketing a miracle cure: \u201cSilver Solution.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis influenza that is now circling the globe, you\u2019re saying that Silver Solution would be effective?\u201d Bakker asked the naturopathic doctor Sherrill Sellman on his Feb. 12 show, holding up a bottle of the product.<\/p>\n

Silver Solution hadn\u2019t been tested on the current strain of the coronavirus, Sellman responded, but \u201cit has been tested on other strains of the coronavirus, and has been able to eliminate it within 12 hours. Totally eliminates it, kills it, deactivates it.\u201d …<\/p>\n

The Food and Drug Administration and Federal Trade Commission told the Jim Bakker show Friday that that pitch, and several others, had crossed the line.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should take immediate action to correct the violations cited in this letter,\u201d officials from the agencies\u00a0wrote to Bakker\u2019s show<\/a>\u00a0in a letter dated March 6.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe claims cited above are not supported by competent and reliable scientific evidence,\u201d the regulators added later. \u201cYou must immediately cease making all such claims.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

If you’re wondering about the word naturopathic<\/em>, Wikipedia<\/strong><\/em> defines<\/a> it fairly harshly:<\/p>\n

Naturopathy<\/b>\u00a0or\u00a0naturopathic medicine<\/b>\u00a0is a form of\u00a0alternative medicine<\/a>\u00a0that employs an array of\u00a0pseudoscientific<\/a>\u00a0practices branded as “natural”, “non-invasive”, or promoting “self-healing”. The ideology and methods of naturopathy are based on\u00a0vitalism<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0folk medicine<\/a>, rather than\u00a0evidence-based medicine<\/a>\u00a0(EBM).\u00a0Naturopathic practitioners generally recommend against following\u00a0modern medical practices<\/a>, including but not limited to\u00a0medical testing<\/a>,\u00a0drugs<\/a>,\u00a0vaccinations<\/a>, and\u00a0surgery<\/a>.\u00a0Instead, naturopathic practice relies on unscientific notions, often leading naturopaths to diagnoses and treatments that have no factual merit.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Why this Sellman dude, who supposedly endorses natural therapies, would think a colloidal silver formulation<\/a> is anything close to natural is rather beyond me. Incidentally, this Skeptical Inquirer<\/strong><\/em> magazine<\/a> cover recently crossed my desk:<\/p>\n

So, it appears this particular Evangelical preacher, even disgraced, can’t stay himself from preying on the credulous. It’s all of a piece, in my mind, since I figure much of his audience will be Evangelicals, because redemption is – quite sensibly – a big part of Christianity.
