Therianthropy<\/b>\u00a0is the\u00a0mythological<\/a>\u00a0ability of human beings to\u00a0metamorphose<\/a>\u00a0into other animals by means of\u00a0shapeshifting<\/a>. It is possible that cave drawings found at\u00a0Les Trois Fr\u00e8res<\/a>, in France, depict ancient beliefs in the concept. The human-like figures appear to have animal characteristics, as seen in the detail pictured above. \u201cThey are half human, half animal. If you look closely, one has a tail and another seems to have a bird head,\u201d says Aubert.<\/p>\n

Such depictions are known as therianthropes. The oldest previously known example was the Lion Man statue found in Germany\u2019s Hohlenstein-Stadel cave. Carved around 40,000 years ago, it combines a lion\u2019s head and human body. Until now, it was the earliest evidence of the ability of humans to conceive of things that don\u2019t exist in nature \u2013 a capacity linked to imagination and spirituality. \u201cNow it seems the same thing was happening in South-East Asia, but even earlier,\u201d says Aubert.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
