{"id":27128,"date":"2019-12-27T15:58:41","date_gmt":"2019-12-27T21:58:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=27128"},"modified":"2019-12-27T15:58:41","modified_gmt":"2019-12-27T21:58:41","slug":"a-different-take-on-making-batteries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2019\/12\/27\/a-different-take-on-making-batteries\/","title":{"rendered":"A Different Take On Making Batteries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From <em><strong>The Guardian<\/strong><\/em> comes a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2019\/oct\/21\/how-uks-disused-mine-shafts-plan-to-store-renewable-energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nice little energy scheme<\/a> involving physics:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Britain\u2019s cheapest \u201cvirtual battery\u201d could be created by hoisting and dropping 12,000-tonne weights \u2013 half the weight of the Statue of Liberty \u2013 down disused mine shafts, according to Imperial College London.<\/p>\n<p>The surprising new source of \u201c<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reference.com\/science\/gravitational-energy-400f974ec4a2f1e\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">gravity energy<\/a>\u201d is being developed by Gravitricity, an Edinburgh-based startup, which hopes to use Britain\u2019s old mines to make better use of\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2019\/oct\/14\/renewable-electricity-overtakes-fossil-fuels-in-uk-for-first-time\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">clean electricity<\/a>\u00a0at half the cost of lithium-ion batteries.<\/p>\n<p>Gravitricity said its system effectively stores energy by using electric winches to hoist the weights to the top of the shaft when there is plenty of renewable energy available, then dropping the weights hundreds of metres down vertical shafts to generate electricity when needed. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Charlie Blair, Gravitricity\u2019s managing director, said: \u201cThe beauty of this is that this can be done multiple times a day for many years, without any loss of performance.
