While the name Ultima Thule<\/em>, referring to the space rock 2014 MU69 which was surveyed by the New Horizons<\/strong><\/em> space probe, had a lovely exotic taste to it, it also had an unfortunate referent to it:<\/p>\n

Goodbye Ultima Thule, hello Arrokoth. The space rock that NASA\u2019s New Horizons probe\u00a0sped past<\/a>\u00a0earlier this year has been given a new name: Arrokoth, which means \u201csky\u201d in the Powhatan and Algonquian languages.<\/p>\n

The rock\u2019s official designation is 2014 MU69, but the New Horizons team nicknamed it Ultima Thule, a mythological reference to a distant and mysterious land. The nickname faced a significant backlash after a reporter at\u00a0Newsweek<\/em>\u00a0pointed out<\/a>\u00a0that the Nazi party used the phrase to refer to the mythical homeland of the Aryan people.\u00a0[NewScientist<\/a><\/strong>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

While casting aspersions on the name Ultima Thule<\/em> just because a bunch of barbarians used it to symbolize a mythical homeland seems a little short-sighted, I like Arrokoth<\/em>, too. It’s properly inclusive, and has its own exotic mouth-feel, at least for me.<\/p>\n

Although, if they had retained Ultima Thule<\/em> and emphasized its barrenness, it would have brought to the fore the worthlessness of Nazi ideology.<\/p>\n

So, onward to a picture of Arrokoth<\/em>.<\/p>\n
