The space rock that NASA\u2019s New Horizons probe\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2188770-nasa-probe-will-hurtle-past-the-most-distant-object-weve-ever-visited\/\">sped past<\/a>\u00a0earlier this year has been given a new name: Arrokoth, which means \u201csky\u201d in the Powhatan and Algonquian languages.<\/p>\n<p>The rock\u2019s official designation is 2014 MU69, but the New Horizons team nicknamed it Ultima Thule, a mythological reference to a distant and mysterious land. The nickname faced a significant backlash after a reporter at\u00a0<em>Newsweek<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/nasa-named-its-next-new-horizons-target-ultima-thule-mythical-land-nazi-844318\">pointed out<\/a>\u00a0that the Nazi party used the phrase to refer to the mythical homeland of the Aryan people.\u00a0<em>[<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2223176-distant-space-rock-known-as-ultima-thule-renamed-to-avoid-nazi-links\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NewScientist<\/a><\/strong>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While casting aspersions on the name <em>Ultima Thule<\/em> just because a bunch of barbarians used it to symbolize a mythical homeland seems a little short-sighted, I like <em>Arrokoth<\/em>, too.
