A person who practices (and possibly advocates) teetotalism is called a\u00a0<i>teetotaler<\/i>\u00a0(plural\u00a0<i>teetotalers<\/i>) or is simply said to be\u00a0<i>teetotal<\/i>. The teetotalism movement was first started in\u00a0<a title=\"Preston, Lancashire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Preston,_Lancashire\">Preston<\/a>, England, in the early 19th century.\u00a0The Preston Temperance Society was founded in 1833 by\u00a0<a title=\"Joseph Livesey\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_Livesey\">Joseph Livesey<\/a>, who was to become a leader of the\u00a0<a title=\"Temperance movement\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Temperance_movement\">temperance movement<\/a>\u00a0and the author of\u00a0<i>The Pledge<\/i>: &#8220;We agree to abstain from all liquors of an\u00a0<a title=\"Alcohol intoxication\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alcohol_intoxication\">intoxicating<\/a>\u00a0quality whether\u00a0<a title=\"Ale\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ale\">ale<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Porter (beer)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Porter_(beer)\">porter<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Wine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wine\">wine<\/a>\u00a0or ardent\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Distilled beverage\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Distilled_beverage\">spirits<\/a>, except as\u00a0<a title=\"Medicine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medicine\">medicine<\/a>.&#8221; <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Teetotalism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Wikipedia<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I used it in an email to a publication to which I subscribe.
