{"id":25925,"date":"2019-09-08T14:41:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-08T19:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=25925"},"modified":"2019-09-08T14:41:00","modified_gmt":"2019-09-08T19:41:00","slug":"please-leave-by-the-clearly-marked-exit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2019\/09\/08\/please-leave-by-the-clearly-marked-exit\/","title":{"rendered":"Please Leave By The Clearly Marked Exit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How does this <strong>not<\/strong> result in the resignation of the entire <strong><em>NOAA<\/em><\/strong> &#8220;political&#8221; leadership?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Nearly a week before the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration publicly backed President Trump over its own scientists, a top NOAA official warned its staff against contradicting the president.<\/p>\n<p>In an agencywide directive sent Sept. 1 to National Weather Service personnel, hours after Trump asserted, with no evidence, that Alabama \u201cwould most likely be hit (much) harder than anticipated,\u201d staff was told to \u201conly stick with official National Hurricane Center forecasts if questions arise from some national level social media posts which hit the news this afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They were also told not to \u201cprovide any opinion,\u201d according to a copy of the email obtained by The Washington Post.<\/p>\n<p>A NOAA meteorologist who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retribution said the note, understood internally to be referring to Trump, came after the National Weather Service office in Birmingham contradicted Trump by tweeting Alabama would \u201cNOT see any impacts from the hurricane.\u201d &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Late Friday afternoon, NOAA officials further angered scientists within and beyond the agency by releasing a statement, attributed to an unnamed agency spokesperson, supporting Trump\u2019s claims on Alabama and chastising the agency\u2019s Birmingham meteorologists for speaking in absolutes.<\/p>\n<p>That statement set off a firestorm among scientists, who attacked NOAA officials for bending to Trump\u2019s will. <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/noaa-staff-warned-in-sept-1-directive-against-contradicting-trump\/2019\/09\/07\/12a52d1a-d18f-11e9-87fa-8501a456c003_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>WaPo<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Perverting the mission of <em><strong>NOAA <\/strong><\/em>or the <em><strong> National Weather Service<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0is not a misdemeanor, if I may draw an analogy, but a <strong>major felony<\/strong>. What&#8217;s the next step down this path? To misrepresent a foul weather forecast because the President made some sort of off-hand remark that Cannot Be Contradicted?<\/p>\n<p>What if defending a President who is showing more definite signs of dementia and narcissism costs citizens their lives?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Acting NOAA administrator Neil Jacobs was involved in drawing up the statement as was the NOAA director of public affairs, Julie Kay Roberts, who has experience in emergency management and worked on the president\u2019s campaign.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There&#8217;s the names you need, at least to begin with. Write your Representative and Senators. This behavior is unacceptable and must stop.
