{"id":25805,"date":"2019-08-31T16:49:04","date_gmt":"2019-08-31T21:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=25805"},"modified":"2019-08-31T16:49:04","modified_gmt":"2019-08-31T21:49:04","slug":"high-school-coach-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2019\/08\/31\/high-school-coach-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"High School Coach Of The Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As a fencer and occasional referee, I&#8217;d be remiss to not note Corlis Hicks, fencing coach at <em><strong>Rochester STEM Academy<\/strong><\/em>, winning an award as 2018-19 USA Fencing High School Coach of the Year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usafencing.org\/news_article\/show\/1038969\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">From<\/a> <em><strong>USA Fencing<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Rochester STEM Academy isn\u2019t where one might traditionally expect to find high school fencing.<\/p>\n<p>The Minnesota high school is more than 1,000 miles away from the East Coast hotbeds of varsity fencing, but Coach\u00a0<strong>Corlis Hicks (Dover, Minn.)\u00a0<\/strong>has built a state championship team of her first-time fencers at the tuition-free public charter school that serves primarily immigrant, minority and underprivileged students.<\/p>\n<p>In just five years\u2019 time, her students have gone from knowing nothing about the sport of fencing and not knowing how to stand in en garde to the women\u2019s \u00e9p\u00e9e team winning the state championship in the 2018-19 season \u2013 the school\u2019s first state title in any athletic activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re reading who had fourth place and who had third place and I\u2019m staring at my girls and they\u2019re standing there, they\u2019re relaxed, they\u2019re getting their pictures taken, and it dawned on me, \u2018oh my gosh, we\u2019ve won first place,\u2019\u201d Hicks said. \u201cThe shock on all their faces followed by glee and the pride in what we\u2019ve done \u2026 the huge smiles of we\u2019ve arrived, we\u2019ve proved something. And they\u2019ve proved it to themselves, to the community that supports us \u2026 so for them, this was a validation that all their work, all their practice time, that they can be successful. Our school for the longest time, and continues to, battle the perception that we are the last-chance place for Somali kids and that\u2019s not true.
