From <em><strong>All-Sky Automated Survey<\/strong><\/em> (<strong><em>ASAS<\/em><\/strong>):<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is the video of the close encounter of Asteroid 2019 OK we have been Twitting all day with the Earth: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bjT7uhQJuO\">https:\/\/t.co\/bjT7uhQJuO<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3e4UyPcdPl\">pic.twitter.com\/3e4UyPcdPl<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; ASAS-SN (@SuperASASSN) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SuperASASSN\/status\/1154190931509350401?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 25, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>ASAS<\/strong><\/em> seems more interested in supernovae, but I think a hit from this asteroid would have been bright even for them. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2019\/07\/26\/it-snuck-up-us-city-killer-asteroid-just-missed-earth-scientists-almost-didnt-detect-it-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">From<\/a> <strong><em>WaPo<\/em><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-elm-loc=\"18\">[Alan Duffy of the Royal Institution of Australia] said astronomers have a nickname for the kind of space rock that just came so close to Earth: \u201cCity-killer asteroids.\u201d If the asteroid had struck Earth, most of it would have probably reached the ground, resulting in devastating damage, Brown said.<\/p>\n<p data-elm-loc=\"19\">\u201cIt would have gone off like a very large nuclear weapon\u201d with enough force to destroy a city, he said. \u201cMany megatons, perhaps in the ballpark of 10 megatons of TNT, so something not to be messed with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-elm-loc=\"20\">In 2013, a significantly smaller meteor \u2014 about 20 meters (65 feet) across, or the size of a six-story building \u2014 broke up over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/europe\/meteorite-injures-more-than-900-in-russian-city\/2013\/02\/15\/ff67c624-7770-11e2-aa12-e6cf1d31106b_story.html?utm_term=.c22d789f7e3f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unleashed an intense shock wave<\/a>\u00a0that collapsed roofs, shattered windows and left about 1,200 people injured. The last space rock to strike Earth similar in size to Asteroid 2019 OK was more than a century ago, Brown said. That asteroid, known as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/science-news\/science-at-nasa\/2008\/30jun_tunguska\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tunguska event<\/a>, caused an explosion that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/rock-samples-suggest-meteor-caused-tunguska-blast-1.13163\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">leveled 2,000 square kilometers<\/a>\u00a0(770 square miles) of forest land in Siberia.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-elm-loc=\"20\">Another reason &#8211; and counting &#8211; to support efforts to detect NEOs, Near Earth Objects, before they end up hitting us.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A small asteroid, termed a city-killer, surprised astronomers by passing by yesterday, quite closely.
