{"id":25266,"date":"2019-07-06T09:16:57","date_gmt":"2019-07-06T14:16:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=25266"},"modified":"2019-07-06T09:16:57","modified_gmt":"2019-07-06T14:16:57","slug":"your-plane-is-humming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2019\/07\/06\/your-plane-is-humming\/","title":{"rendered":"Your Plane Is Humming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Long time readers know I&#8217;ve explored the topic of electric airplanes, but not in a while, so this <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1650449\/electric-airplanes-take-flight-at-the-paris-air-show\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">note<\/a> in <em><strong>Quartz<\/strong><\/em> from the Paris Air Show caught my eye:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"a1dbe quartz\">The world\u2019s largest aerospace event, the Paris Air Show, was held this week. By the numbers, the electric airplanes on display were a sideshow. More than 400 fossil fuel-powered aircraft\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-06-20\/airbus-will-challenge-boeing-to-undo-showstopping-737-max-deal'\">worth $15 billion<\/a>\u00a0were sold as airlines stocked up to serve the world\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iata.org\/pressroom\/pr\/Pages\/2018-10-24-02.aspx\">burgeoning demand for air travel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a1dbe quartz\">But it was Cape Air\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/06\/18\/all-electric-jet-firm-eviation-announces-us-airline-as-first-customer.html\">order<\/a>\u00a0of the first commercial electric airplanes that drew particular attention. The Israeli startup Eviation Aircraft took a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-48630656\">double-digit<\/a>\u201d number of orders for a $4 million electric plane dubbed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eviation.co\/alice\/\">Alice<\/a>. The aircraft can fly 650 miles (1,046 km) at around 500 miles per hour (805 km\/h) with three electric motors on the tail and one on each wingtip. The prototype carries a 900 kWh lithium-ion battery (about nine times bigger than Tesla\u2019s largest automotive battery).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Note this line drawing of the airplane:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eviation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/alice-scheme-1.svg\" width=\"738\" height=\"482\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not only is it a pusher propeller configuration, but there&#8217;s pushers out on the wing tips. Now isn&#8217;t that odd?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it&#8217;s common, I don&#8217;t know.
