Historically, the name usually refers to the\u00a0<b>Bavarian Illuminati<\/b>, an\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Age of enlightenment\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Age_of_enlightenment\">Enlightenment<\/a>-era\u00a0<a title=\"Secret society\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Secret_society\">secret society<\/a>founded on 1 May 1776. The society&#8217;s goals were to oppose\u00a0<a title=\"Superstition\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Superstition\">superstition<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Obscurantism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Obscurantism\">obscurantism<\/a>, religious influence over public life, and abuses of\u00a0<a title=\"Power (social and political)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Power_(social_and_political)\">state power<\/a>. &#8220;The order of the day,&#8221; they wrote in their general statutes, &#8220;is to put an end to the machinations of the purveyors of injustice, to control them without dominating them.&#8221;\u00a0The Illuminati\u2014along with\u00a0<a title=\"Freemasonry\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Freemasonry\">Freemasonry<\/a>\u00a0and other secret societies\u2014were outlawed through\u00a0<a title=\"Edict\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edict\">edict<\/a>\u00a0by the Bavarian ruler\u00a0<a title=\"Charles Theodore, Elector of Bavaria\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Theodore,_Elector_of_Bavaria\">Charles Theodore<\/a>\u00a0with the encouragement of the\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catholic_Church\">Catholic Church<\/a>, in 1784, 1785, 1787, and 1790.\u00a0In the following several years, the group was vilified by conservative and religious critics who claimed that they continued underground and were responsible for the\u00a0<a title=\"French Revolution\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_Revolution\">French Revolution<\/a>.\u00a0<em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Illuminati\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Wikipedia<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Noted in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/history\/2019\/07\/03\/saving-thomas-jeffersons-soul\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Saving Thomas Jefferson\u2019s soul<\/em><\/a>,&#8221; Gregory S. Schneider, <em><strong>WaPo<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI had often heard you [former President Thomas Jefferson] indignantly called, deist, infidel, illuminati &amp;c &amp;c,\u201d King wrote. Surely, Jefferson did not want to be lumped in with \u201chorrid\u201d figures such as Voltaire and other free thinkers who questioned the value of central religion?
