A reader points at the latest on that troubled relationship <a href=\"http:\/\/pulse.ncpolicywatch.org\/2019\/06\/20\/ncga-budget-proposals-are-a-slap-in-the-face-to-educators\/?fbclid=IwAR2dsjuFLZZMKBSo9QyKyqeeoIWDQ7TsUDsSfESU0y4XfSEojdxOp28uW30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via<\/a> <em><strong>The Progressive Pulse<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>On May 1, thousands of educators and public education advocates\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsobserver.com\/news\/politics-government\/article229849024.html\" rel=\"noopener\">flooded the streets of Raleigh<\/a>\u00a0to demand additional resources for North Carolina\u2019s public schools. Organizers from the North Carolina Association of Educators outlined\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncjustice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/FACT-SHEET-May-1-2019-no-gray-boxes.pdf?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=bc6001d6-b67d-4543-bb23-5219fc32bba4\" rel=\"noopener\">five policy priorities<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Provide enough school librarians, psychologists, social workers, counselors, nurses, and other health professionals to meet national standards.<\/li>\n<li>Provide $15 minimum wage for all school personnel, 5% raise for all public school personnel, and a 5% cost of living adjustment for retirees.<\/li>\n<li>Expand Medicaid to improve the health of our students and families.<\/li>\n<li>Reinstate state retiree health benefits eliminated by the General Assembly in 2017.<\/li>\n<li>Restore advanced degree compensation stripped by the General Assembly in 2013.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And did the Legislature begin working on passing bills to satisfy those demands? Not so much.
