{"id":2451,"date":"2015-10-13T11:46:27","date_gmt":"2015-10-13T16:46:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=2451"},"modified":"2015-10-13T11:46:27","modified_gmt":"2015-10-13T16:46:27","slug":"corporate-cheating-of-customers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/10\/13\/corporate-cheating-of-customers\/","title":{"rendered":"Corporate Cheating of Customers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Continuing the theme under a new name, Michael Graham Richard @ <em><strong>Treehugger.com<\/strong><\/em> believes he may have found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.treehugger.com\/corporate-responsibility\/samsungs-volkswagen-moment-tv-found-cheat-power-efficiency-test.html\" target=\"_blank\">evidence<\/a> of another scandal, much like the <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/09\/19\/the-next-electric-car-ctd-3\/\" target=\"_blank\">VW scam<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Samsung likes to brag about its &#8216;smart&#8217; televisions. Well, maybe they&#8217;re a little too smart for their own good. Drawing an uncomfortable parallel with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.treehugger.com\/corporate-responsibility\/vw-emissiongate-1-million-tons-illegal-pollution-each-year.html\">Volkswagen&#8217;s emission rigging scheme<\/a>, the European Commission is now investigating the South-Korean company to figure out whether its televisions&#8217; are designed to modify their power consumption when they detect that they are being tested for energy efficiency. This alleged fraud has been uncovered by independent labs, once again.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>From his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2015\/oct\/01\/samsung-tvs-appear-more-energy-efficient-in-tests-than-in-real-life\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a> at <em><strong>the guardian<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The <a class=\" u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/european-commission\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">European commission<\/a> says it will investigate any allegations of cheating the tests and has pledged to tighten energy efficiency regulations to outlaw the use of so-called \u201cdefeat devices\u201d in TVs or other consumer products, after several EU states raised similar concerns.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Which sounds very upright, doesn&#8217;t it?\u00a0 Outlawing defeat devices, that is.\u00a0 Except we&#8217;re really talking <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fraud\" target=\"_blank\"><em>consumer fraud<\/em><\/a> here, and so there&#8217;s a law already in place to cover the situation.<\/p>\n<p>But as an engineer, my question is this: why are the test engineers disclosing their test environment to the development engineers?\u00a0 That&#8217;s <strong><del>madness<\/del><\/strong> barely understandable, and I do mean barely.\u00a0 Additionally, the testing should cover a very wide range of conditions in order to understand the behavior of the device as conditions change &#8211; it&#8217;s close to insanity to suggest that recognition of a test environment is even possible for responsible testing.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, it&#8217;s really on the test engineers to explain how the device manufacturers can possibly discern the difference between real environments and test environments, and why their test environments should be detectable.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Continuing the theme under a new name, Michael Graham Richard @ Treehugger.com believes he may have found evidence of another scandal, much like the VW scam: Samsung likes to brag about its &#8216;smart&#8217; televisions.
