{"id":2391,"date":"2015-10-09T11:30:56","date_gmt":"2015-10-09T16:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=2391"},"modified":"2015-10-09T11:30:56","modified_gmt":"2015-10-09T16:30:56","slug":"coal-digestion-ctd-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/10\/09\/coal-digestion-ctd-6\/","title":{"rendered":"Coal Digestion, Ctd"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fossil fuels run into some more headwinds, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.treehugger.com\/corporate-responsibility\/another-bank-dumps-conventional-coal-pledges-10bn-renewables.html\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> Sami Grover @ <em><strong>TreeHugger.com<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The latest to join the club is ANZ, one of Australia&#8217;s big four banks, which The Guardian reports is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2015\/oct\/06\/anz-will-not-finance-dirty-coal-plants-and-pledges-10bn-for-clean-energy\">making a bold commitment to stop funding any new conventional coal-fired power plants<\/a> that don&#8217;t deploy Carbon Capture and Storage and\/or similar technologies that significantly reduce carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, ANZ is pledging $10 billion over the next 5 years to fund renewable energy, reforestation, energy efficiency and other low emission technologies.<\/p>\n<p>This is a promising sign indeed. And it may be driven as much by economics as it is ethics. Indeed, ANZ acknowledged in a statement that its exposure to carbon intensive industries was considered by many to be an increasingly significant financial risk, and that the bank needed to play its part in helping to manage an &#8220;orderly transition&#8221; from fossil fuels: &#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Banks are, supposedly, experts at evaluating risk.\u00a0 When the business evaluation of the situation calls for moving away from fossil fuels, I think we can expect faster and faster movement towards the renewable sources of energy.<\/p>\n<p>Sami&#8217;s source is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2015\/oct\/06\/anz-will-not-finance-dirty-coal-plants-and-pledges-10bn-for-clean-energy\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a> <em><strong>the guardian<\/strong><\/em> article.\u00a0 It includes this statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But ANZ said it was committed to the internationally agreed target of limiting global warming to 2C above pre-industrial times. The bank said it would transparently report its progress on climate and set targets to reduce its own emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Australia three other largest banks \u2013 Westpac, Commonwealth Bank and NAB \u2013 are all signed up to sustainability commitments for their lending. But environmental groups have pressed them to do more by ruling out investment in coal projects, as <a class=\" u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2015\/aug\/10\/standard-chartered-quits-controversial-queensland-coal-mining-project\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"in-body-link\">overseas banks have done<\/a> with Adani\u2019s huge Carmichael mine in Queensland.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be interested in knowing how ANZ defines &#8220;transparently.&#8221;\u00a0 Done properly and it can become an excellent example for other companies to follow, or not, depending on outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if the <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/09\/14\/australia-science-ctd-4\/\" target=\"_blank\">accession of Mr. Turnbull<\/a> to the Prime Ministership pressured <em><strong>ANZ<\/strong><\/em> into making this commitment.\u00a0 <em><strong>the guardian<\/strong><\/em> article also notes this about Australia&#8217;s situation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>According to University College London, 90% of Australia\u2019s known coal reserves <a class=\" u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2015\/jan\/07\/much-worlds-fossil-fuel-reserve-must-stay-buried-prevent-climate-change-study-says\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"in-body-link\">must be left unburned<\/a> to keep the world on track to avoid warming above 2C.
