For all of Supreme Leader Khamenei’s harsh statements <\/a>towards the United States during and following the Iran Deal<\/a>‘s negotiation phase, it’s becoming clear that the hard liners are not preeminent in Iran.\u00a0 AL Monitor <\/b><\/i>reports <\/a>on the divergence between Kayhan<\/a>, a hard line publication previously linked to Khamenei, its editor in chief, Hossein Shariatmadari, and the Supreme Leader:<\/p>\n

On Sept.\u00a01, the Office of the Supreme Leader published a statement on Khamenei\u2019s position on Iran\u2019s nuclear negotiations<\/a> with six world powers. It said the latter\u00a0was \u201copenly and clearly\u201d communicated in Khamenei\u2019s meeting with students<\/a> of Imam Hussein University<\/a> on April 9<\/span><\/span> and further repeated in meetings with top officials during the holy month of Ramadan<\/a> and subsequently on Eid al-Fitr<\/a>. At the end of the statement, it was again emphasized that\u00a0\u201canything else attributed to the supreme leader is false.\u201d<\/p>\n

As far as the media and public opinion in Iran are concerned, this statement was a direct answer to Shariatmadari\u2019s Aug.\u00a014<\/span><\/span>\u00a0editorial,\u00a0\u201cThe Only Option on the Table<\/a>.\u201d Shariatmadari had made references to Khamenei\u2019s Eid al-Fitr speech in this piece and claimed,\u00a0\u201cWe can confidently say that he\u00a0is not at all satisfied with the text of the\u00a0agreement.\u201d Since Khamenei had not yet expressed any opinion on the July 14<\/span><\/span> Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) at that time, Shariatmadari\u2019s editorial was widely interpreted as the supreme leader\u2019s unofficial stance. …<\/p>\n

Referring to the Sept.\u00a01 statement, the journalist added,\u00a0\u201cThis was the first time that the Office of the Supreme Leader published a statement officially rejecting the claims made by Shariatmadari. I think this was a serious blow to the position of Shariatmadari and Kayhan, and was a sign of a divergence between the positions of the supreme leader\u00a0and Kayhan.\u201d<\/p>\n

The maneuvering against Shariatmadari appears to have first begun Aug.\u00a017<\/span><\/span>, when Hamid Reza Moghadam Far, cultural-media adviser to the top commander of the IRGC, published an open letter addressed to Kayhan\u2019s editor-in-chief in Tasnim News, which has close ties to the IRGC. In the letter, Moghadam Far explicitly stated,\u00a0\u201cI am amazed that a veteran revolutionary such as yourself is asserting and trying to convince his readership that \u2018the supreme leader thinks as I do<\/a>, analyzes as I do\u00a0and understands as I do\u2019!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So it appears the Supreme Leader is not siding with the hard-liners who wish to reject the agreement.\u00a0 Shariatmadari, reputedly an ideologue, retains his position, but his influence will now be somewhat questionable.\u00a0 And the deal will continue forward.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
