{"id":2201,"date":"2015-09-21T20:09:16","date_gmt":"2015-09-22T01:09:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=2201"},"modified":"2015-09-21T20:09:16","modified_gmt":"2015-09-22T01:09:16","slug":"gop-strategy-it-may-be-terminal-ctd-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/09\/21\/gop-strategy-it-may-be-terminal-ctd-2\/","title":{"rendered":"GOP Strategy: It may be terminal, Ctd"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back in April we covered <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/04\/09\/gop-strategy-it-may-be-terminal\/\" target=\"_blank\">the guy<\/a> who was convinced Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker would win by never admitting to be wrong.\u00a0 Today, before a single primary has been run, Walker dropped out.\u00a0 His exit message is intriguing, as <a href=\"http:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/livewire\/scott-walker-announcement\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> by <em><strong>Talking Points Memo<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Walker said he was reminded at church that the Bible &#8220;is full of stories about people who are called to be leaders in unusual ways.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today, I believe that I am being called to lead by helping to clear the field in this race so that a positive, conservative message can rise to the top of the field,&#8221; Walker said. &#8220;With this in mind, I will suspend my campaign immediately.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He went on to directly take on Trump, who has dominated the rest of the field in the polls since getting into the race this summer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I encourage other Republican presidential candidates to consider doing the same so the voters can focus on a limited number of candidates who can offer a positive, conservative alternative to the current frontrunner,&#8221; Walker added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It sounds like he may have been ordered to stop campaigning and just take out the frontrunner, doesn&#8217;t it?\u00a0 He&#8217;s young enough that he could run again next cycle, or the next, or the one after that.\u00a0 His support in the polls has dropped from top tier to miniscule as many polls have noted.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s one from HuffPo with commentary from Sam Wang at the <em><strong>Princeton Electoral Consortium<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12951\" title=\"summer-of-trump-ends_2\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/election.princeton.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/summer-of-trump-ends_2.jpg?resize=500%2C256\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"256\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Considering Fiorina\u2019s problems with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/caught-fib-fiorina-refuses-acknowledge-misstep\">accuracy<\/a> and her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Backfire-Fiorinas-High-Stakes-Battle-Hewlett-Packard\/dp\/0471267651\">dismal performance<\/a> as Hewlett-Packard\u2019s CEO, it seems likely that her rise will also be transient. If 2012 is a guide, she will last one or two months then fade, just as Cain, Gingrich, Santorum, and Bachmann did \u2013 and now, maybe Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Walker\u2019s fallen below 2% and Jeb! is stuck around 8%. Assuming those trends persist, the highest-finishing serious candidate is Marco Rubio. As I have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newrepublic.com\/article\/122333\/donald-trump-not-frontrunner-smarter-polls-would-prove-it\">said before<\/a> (link to <em>The New Republic<\/em>), Rubio is a relatively likely consensus candidate. In the past, the GOP has usually settled on a strong general-election candidate. Rubio polls relatively well against likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
