{"id":2005,"date":"2015-09-08T17:16:05","date_gmt":"2015-09-08T22:16:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=2005"},"modified":"2015-09-08T17:16:05","modified_gmt":"2015-09-08T22:16:05","slug":"the-iran-deal-roundup-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/09\/08\/the-iran-deal-roundup-leadership\/","title":{"rendered":"The Iran Deal Roundup: Leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s the situation: the Democrats are, including the right wing of the party and those under pressure from a public unversed in foreign relations, rallying behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/09\/02\/the-iran-deal-roundup-ctd-24\/\" target=\"_blank\">Iran deal<\/a> &#8211; only two Democratic Senators have registered opposition to the deal, both heavily involved with Israel.\u00a0 The current GOP leadership, on the other hand, is united in opposition to the deal, the GOP presidential contenders competing to make outrageous comments in order to catch the attention and votes of the GOP base.\u00a0 Alone amongst the allies of the USA, Israel stands against the deal.\u00a0 While some of the Mid East allies are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.al-monitor.com\/pulse\/originals\/2015\/09\/iran-nuclear-deal-us-saudi-summit-gulf-security.html\" target=\"_blank\">grumpy<\/a>, even Saudi Arabia has signed on.<\/p>\n<p>But now, as Steve Benen @ <i><b>Maddowblog <\/b><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/gop-elder-statesmen-continue-rally-behind-iran-deal\" target=\"_blank\">notes<\/a>, the old GOP leadership is showing up for perhaps its last stand &#8211; against those who supplanted it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Because, whether the right likes it or not, the GOP\u2019s elder statesmen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/msnbc\/colin-powell-iran-deal-pretty-good-deal\" target=\"_blank\">keep announcing their support<\/a> for the diplomatic solution.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Former Secretary of State Colin Powell expressed support for the nuclear agreement with Iran, calling the various planks Iranian leaders accepted \u201cremarkable\u201d and dismissing critics\u2019 concerns over its implementation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a pretty good deal,\u201d he said on NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Powell, a veteran of the Bush\/Cheney administration and the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs, described the provisions of the Iran deal as \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/meet-the-press\/video\/colin-powell-on-iran-deal--i-think-it-is-a-good-deal-520273475781\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">remarkable<\/a>\u201d and praised the \u201cvery vigorous verification regime [that] has been put into place.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><i><b>PoliticusUSA <\/b><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.politicususa.com\/2015\/09\/06\/colin-powell-calls-iran-deal-remarkable-changes.html\" target=\"_blank\">notes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThey had stockpiled something in the neighborhood of 12,000 kilograms of uranium. This deal will bring it down to 300 kilograms,\u201d Powell said. \u201cIt\u2019s a remarkable reduction. I\u2019m amazed that they would do this this but they have done it.\u201dPutting a finely honed knife to the back of Republican fearmongering about the Iran deal, Powell said, \u201cThese are remarkable changes. We have stopped this highway race that they were going down and I think this is very, very important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the finishing blow, Powell took out the Republican argument that we just gave them everything and got nothing, \u201cWill they comply with it? Well, they get nothing until they comply and that\u2019s the important part of the arrangement.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/08\/15\/the-iran-deal-roundup-ctd-19\/\" target=\"_blank\">joins Brent Snowcroft, and former Senators Richard Lugar and John Warner<\/a> in supporting the deal &#8211; senior members of the GOP who have been shoved aside by the current leadership.\u00a0 Of course, not all the GOP retirees are in the same boat.\u00a0 From another Benen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/cheneys-iran-lie-exposed-dramatic-fashion\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Former Vice President Dick Cheney is scheduled to speak today at a D.C. think tank, delivering remarks intended to condemn the international nuclear agreement with Iran. If <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2015\/08\/dick-cheney-speak-out-against-iran-nuclear-deal-121674.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">an ignominious exchange<\/a> over the weekend was evidence of his expertise, however, Cheney might want to reschedule, brush up on the details, and rethink his approach.<\/p>\n<p>The underlying challenge for the failed former V.P. is the degree to which his own Iran policy failed spectacularly. Iran didn\u2019t have a meaningful nuclear weapons program until Tehran developed one \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/if-cheney-wants-conversation-about-iran\" target=\"_blank\">during the Bush\/Cheney administration<\/a>.
