{"id":194,"date":"2015-03-19T23:19:41","date_gmt":"2015-03-20T04:19:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=194"},"modified":"2015-03-19T23:19:41","modified_gmt":"2015-03-20T04:19:41","slug":"new-mystery-on-mars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/03\/19\/new-mystery-on-mars\/","title":{"rendered":"New Mystery on Mars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/dn26983-mystery-cloudlike-blobs-over-mars-baffle-astronomers.html#\">NewScientist<\/a><\/em> (paywall) summarizes a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v518\/n7540\/full\/nature14162.html\"><em>Nature<\/em> article<\/a> (another paywall) concerning a new mystery of Mars:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"infuse\">So it was that much more surprising when, on 12 March 2012, amateur astronomers around the world noticed a strange blob rising out of the planet&#8217;s southern hemisphere, soaring to 250 kilometres above the surface.<\/p>\n<p class=\"infuse\">They watched for 11 days as it grew to around 1000 kilometres across, even stretching a &#8220;finger&#8221; out into space. &#8220;I was really quite amazed that it was sticking out the side of the planet quite prominently,&#8221; says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.damianpeach.com\">Damian Peach<\/a>, who lives in Selsey, UK, and was one of the first to spot it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"infuse\">Poor weather and other issues meant no one had their eye on Mars the following week, and by 2 April it seemed to have disappeared. Then on 6 April a second object of the same type emerged from the same spot and lasted another 10 days.
