{"id":18431,"date":"2018-11-25T13:23:37","date_gmt":"2018-11-25T19:23:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=18431"},"modified":"2018-11-25T13:23:37","modified_gmt":"2018-11-25T19:23:37","slug":"and-china-has-this","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2018\/11\/25\/and-china-has-this\/","title":{"rendered":"And China Has This?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve never heard of <em>quantum radar<\/em> before, and I fear this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2185188-china-may-have-developed-a-quantum-radar-that-can-spot-stealth-planes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">simple explanation<\/a> in <em><strong>NewScientist<\/strong><\/em> (17 November 2018, paywall) may still be too far above my head:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In theory, a quantum radar can overcome this by using\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article-topic\/quantum-mechanics\/\">two streams of entangled photons<\/a>. These are pairs of photons that have a weird connection so a change to one affects the other, even if they are miles apart.<\/p>\n<p>The first photon stream is sent out,\u00a0like a standard radar beam, and\u00a0bounces off objects in the sky. The second stream remains inside the\u00a0system.<\/p>\n<p>Because the photons are entangled, the returning photons can\u00a0be matched with those in the stay-at-home stream, so all background noise can be filtered out. This includes deliberate interference, such as radar jamming or spoofing signals put out to confuse radar. What is left is a clear image of the target, with no extraneous signal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Maybe if I was a physicist, or an electrical engineer.
