{"id":17338,"date":"2018-09-02T13:01:58","date_gmt":"2018-09-02T18:01:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=17338"},"modified":"2018-09-02T13:01:58","modified_gmt":"2018-09-02T18:01:58","slug":"or-they-gave-their-course-a-goose","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2018\/09\/02\/or-they-gave-their-course-a-goose\/","title":{"rendered":"Or They Gave Their Course A Goose"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of months ago <em><strong>Astronomy.com<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.astronomy.com\/news\/2018\/06\/speeding-interstellar-object-oumuamua-is-a-comet-not-an-asteroid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that the interstellar object that zoomed through our solar system appears to have been a <em>comet<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-018-0254-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new study<\/a>, published June 27 in the journal\u00a0<em>Nature<\/em>, researchers determined that \u2018Oumuamua is slowly and steadily accelerating away from the Sun, which means it\u2019s currently traveling faster than is predicted by celestial mechanics \u2014 a very well-understood branch of astronomy that deals with the motions of cosmic objects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur high-precision measurements of \u2018Oumuamua\u2019s position revealed that there was something affecting its motion other than the gravitational forces of the Sun and planets,\u201d said team-lead Marco Micheli of the European Space Agency in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/press-release\/our-solar-system-s-first-known-interstellar-object-gets-unexpected-speed-boost\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers explored a number of possible scenarios in an attempt to explain the faster-than-expected speed with which \u2018Oumuamua is hurtling out of the solar system. But after considering all the possibilities (such as solar-radiation pressure, friction-like forces, and magnetic interactions with the solar wind), the team concluded the most likely explanation is that the Sun is causing \u2018Oumuamua to vent gas and dust from its surface in a process called\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.astronomy.com\/news\/2017\/12\/comet-67p\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outgassing<\/a>, which almost exclusively occurs in icy comets, not rocky asteroids.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The assumption being <em>no intelligence deliberately altering course<\/em>, of course. They do note the lack of coma &amp; tail, which they attribute to the small particles causing same to having been exhausted. The comet may be dissolving into bigger fragments.<\/p>\n<p>And, as a science geek, it&#8217;s nice to get back to charismatic science &#8211; it&#8217;s uplifting to the spirit.
