{"id":17294,"date":"2018-08-30T08:14:25","date_gmt":"2018-08-30T13:14:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=17294"},"modified":"2018-08-30T08:16:03","modified_gmt":"2018-08-30T13:16:03","slug":"reaching-across-the-aisle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2018\/08\/30\/reaching-across-the-aisle\/","title":{"rendered":"Reaching Across The Aisle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jennifer Rubin is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/opinions\/wp\/2018\/08\/29\/republicans-cant-even-agree-to-take-a-segregationists-name-off-a-building\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enraged<\/a> that the Republicans are resisting the idea of renaming the Russell Senate Building to honor the late Senator McCain:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-elm-loc=\"1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/6\/63\/Russell_senate_office_building.jpg\/360px-Russell_senate_office_building.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"284\" \/>If you want to understand just how morally bankrupt and reactionary is the Republican Party these days, look no further than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/powerpost\/republican-senators-wary-of-renaming-russell-building-for-mccain\/2018\/08\/28\/a8aa5af4-aab9-11e8-b1da-ff7faa680710_story.html?utm_term=.82769084e5e5\">Senate Republicans\u2019 opposition<\/a>\u00a0to replacing the name of the late Democratic senator from Georgia and notorious\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/08\/28\/us\/politics\/russell-senate-building-mccain.html\">segregationist<\/a>\u00a0Richard Russell on a Senate building with that of their recently deceased colleague, John McCain.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/404018-renaming-senate-office-building-after-mccain-sparks-gop-backlash\">The Hill reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"citation blockquote\">\n<p data-elm-loc=\"2\">\u201cSenator Russell was a well respected man from the South and up here too,\u201d said Sen.\u00a0<span class=\"rollover-people\" data-behavior=\"rolloverpeople\"><a class=\"rollover-people-link\" href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/richard-shelby\" data-nid=\"348617\">Richard Shelby<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(R-Ala.), adding that he was \u201ca man of his time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-elm-loc=\"2\">\u201cHe was a well-respected senator,\u201d Shelby said. \u2026<\/p>\n<p data-elm-loc=\"2\">\u201cIf you want to get into that you have to get into George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and all of our \u2014 most of our Founding Fathers, maybe with the exception of Hamilton,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s easy to prejudge what they should have done.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-elm-loc=\"2\">Better to name a ship after him, which happened in a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USS_John_S._McCain_(DDG-56)#Naming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hackhanded<\/a> sort of way. But that&#8217;s not really my point.
