{"id":16644,"date":"2018-07-17T10:38:43","date_gmt":"2018-07-17T15:38:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=16644"},"modified":"2018-07-14T10:44:12","modified_gmt":"2018-07-14T15:44:12","slug":"off-the-beaten-path","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2018\/07\/17\/off-the-beaten-path\/","title":{"rendered":"Off The Beaten Path"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The organization <strong><em>Americans United for Separation of Church and State<\/em><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.au.org\/blogs\/wall-of-separation\/brett-kavanaugh-is-the-wrong-choice-for-the-supreme-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">does not like<\/a> the nomination of Judge Kavanaugh to <em><strong>SCOTUS.<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Among their points:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Third, in friend-of-the-court briefs in both\u00a0<em>Santa Fe<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlawimages.com\/efile\/supreme\/briefs\/99-2036\/99-2036fo7.pdf\"><em>Good News Club v. Milford Central School<\/em><\/a>, as well as in a 2017\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aei.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/From-the-Bench.pdf\">speech<\/a>, Kavanaugh argued against long-standing precedent prohibiting the use of public funds for religious activities. If the Supreme Court were to adopt Kavanaugh\u2019s views on public funding of religion, that would upend the bedrock constitutional principle that we each get to decide for ourselves whether and how our money goes to support religion.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Which is more than a little disturbing, if true. Naturally, a summary like this elides nuance.
