{"id":16371,"date":"2018-06-25T18:52:58","date_gmt":"2018-06-25T23:52:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=16371"},"modified":"2018-06-25T18:52:58","modified_gmt":"2018-06-25T23:52:58","slug":"the-influence-of-money-over-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2018\/06\/25\/the-influence-of-money-over-time\/","title":{"rendered":"The Influence Of Money Over Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the years the <em><strong>National Rifle Association<\/strong><\/em> (<em><strong>NRA<\/strong><\/em>) has delighted in grading our legislators in the context of 2nd Amendment absolutism, or, inversely, gun control, by assigning a letter grade as if the legislators were in a school and needed to be corrected in their thinking in the failing cases.<\/p>\n<p>A subtle application of dominance theory.<\/p>\n<p>But apparently something has gone amiss for the <em><strong>NRA<\/strong><\/em>, because they&#8217;ve taken down the grades. <em><strong>WaPo&#8217;s<\/strong><\/em> Philip Bump has the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/politics\/wp\/2018\/06\/20\/a-leading-gun-control-group-just-released-nine-years-of-nra-grades-for-politicians\/?utm_term=.43cc3a1a0b66\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">story<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-elm-loc=\"4\">Last week, though, the Washington Post reported\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/politics\/wp\/2018\/06\/12\/the-nra-appears-to-pull-old-legislator-grades-from-its-website\/?utm_term=.2cbb0b48f1ce\">a change<\/a>\u00a0in the NRA\u2019s presentation of its letter grades. Although evaluations for current races are online, past grades \u2014 once available to members \u2014 no longer are. When a Post reporter called the NRA to find out where the past grades had gone, the person who answered the phone said, \u201cI think our enemies were using that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-elm-loc=\"4\">Indeed? But how?\u00a0<em><strong>Everytown for Gun Safety<\/strong><\/em> is a gun control organization, and thus an adversary for the currently radical version of the <em><strong>NRA<\/strong><\/em>. Here&#8217;s the hint:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Why did Everytown compile the data? In a statement, the organization explained that \u201cthe NRA wanted to hide this information from the public. Everytown thinks it is important that voters see it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p data-elm-loc=\"4\">Imagine watching the letter grades change for a Democratic legislator who is hungry for campaign contributions. Imagine seeing them trend from F to A. Wouldn&#8217;t that make you wonder if this legislator is unduly influenced by NRA contributions?<\/p>\n<p data-elm-loc=\"4\">Looks like the <em><strong>NRA<\/strong><\/em> is trying to protect the legislators they&#8217;ve bought. After all, they&#8217;re expensive and you can&#8217;t just have them disappearing.
