{"id":16132,"date":"2018-06-08T08:26:35","date_gmt":"2018-06-08T13:26:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=16132"},"modified":"2018-06-08T08:26:35","modified_gmt":"2018-06-08T13:26:35","slug":"being-pushed-along","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2018\/06\/08\/being-pushed-along\/","title":{"rendered":"Being Pushed Along"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On <em><strong>Lawfare<\/strong><\/em>, Paul Rosenzweig <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawfareblog.com\/manafort-tampering-allegations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opines<\/a> that Special Counsel Mueller may be feeling the pressure, as Rosenzweig doesn&#8217;t see the witness tampering charge against Manafort as being compelling.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So what is\u00a0going on here?\u00a0Why would Mueller&#8217;s team, whose actions to date have been premised on overwhelming evidence, take this risk and go out on this evidentiary limb?<\/p>\n<p>My speculation is simple: This\u00a0is a sign that they are feeling pressure.\u00a0Possibly from Trump.\u00a0Possibly from Deputy Attorney\u00a0General Rod Rosenstein.\u00a0Possibly just from their reading of the public tea leaves.\u00a0Whatever the source of the pressure, they have an increased sense of urgency to move quickly.<\/p>\n<p>And that translates to the want, and need, for Manafort&#8217;s cooperation.\u00a0Not later but\u00a0<em>now<\/em>.\u00a0And the only way to get that cooperation now is to ramp up the pressure.\u00a0The motion, if successful, would put Manafort in jail sooner rather than later, at the end of what promises to be a lengthy trial.\u00a0That would concentrate Manafort&#8217;s mind quite a bit\u2014and this is the type of pressure tactic that prosecutors use all the time.\u00a0So that isn&#8217;t a surprise.<\/p>\n<p>What is surprising, as I have said, is how thin the factual basis appears to be for these\u00a0charges.\u00a0I hope that the Mueller team isn&#8217;t rushing its\u00a0effort. Now is no time to panic.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>An interesting insight. Or perhaps they&#8217;ve run into a wall and are looking for a way to get the next bit of information. Manafort, as campaign chairman, would certainly be a best bet, outside of going to the source of the matter, but Trump won&#8217;t talk to Mueller.
