I’ve been hearing for weeks now how Trump and his associates have been comparing various conspiracy theories to the Watergate scandal of the 1970s. For instance<\/a>, here’s Talking Points Memo<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump\u2019s reelection campaign used his recent \u201cdemand<\/a>\u201d that the Justice Department investigate special counsel Robert Mueller\u2019s probe in a fundraising email Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWORSE than Watergate,\u201d the email\u2019s subject line read.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hereby DEMAND that the Department of Justice investigate whether Obama\u2019s FBI and DOJ infiltrated or surveilled our campaign for political purposes,\u201d the email, signed by Trump, reads.<\/p>\n

\u201cTHIS COULD BE THE GREATEST POLITICAL SCANDAL IN AMERICAN HISTORY.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI need you to sign your name right this second to join me in demanding this abuse of power gets investigated.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

And a few days ago, Steve Benen has compiled<\/a> a list of them:<\/p>\n

According to the current president,\u00a0Uranium One<\/a>,\u00a0for example, is Watergate. So is the\u00a0non-existent wiretapping<\/a>\u00a0of Trump Tower.\u00a0Benghazi<\/a>, Trump has assured us, is \u201cbigger than Watergate.\u201d What\u2019s more, Joe Arpaio\u2019s investigation into Barack Obama\u2019s\u00a0birth certificate<\/a>, Trump wrote in 2012, \u201ccould dwarf Watergate.\u201d<\/p>\n

In March, the president said the Justice Department\u2019s\u00a0investigation<\/a>\u00a0into his campaign is \u201cbigger than Watergate,\u201d and yesterday, worked up by something he saw in conservative media, Trump added that the FBI had an \u201cinformant<\/a>\u201d in his political operation, which he said is \u2013 you guessed it \u2013 \u201cbigger than Watergate!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I have one question: President Trump does understand that Watergate<\/a> involved an American President conspiring in a disgraceful action that resulted in his forced resignation, right? Every time he uses that comparison, it serves to remind Americans of a certain age of the abuses of another Republican President.<\/p>\n
