It&#8217;s Fareed Zakaria <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/the-best-parts-of-comeys-book-have-nothing-to-do-with-trump\/2018\/04\/19\/307df2ae-440f-11e8-bba2-0976a82b05a2_story.html\">in<\/a> <em><strong>WaPo<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One of the oft-repeated criticisms of America is that it has too many lawyers. Maybe, but one of the country\u2019s great strengths is its legal culture. As I\u2019ve written before, Alexis de Tocqueville worried that without a class of patriotic and selfless aristocrats, the United States could fall prey to demagogues and populists. But he took comfort in the fact that,\u00a0<a title=\"books.google.com\" href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=Rx9N2Uwac7EC&amp;q=untrammeled+vices#v=snippet&amp;q=at%20the%20bar%20or%20on%20the%20bench&amp;f=false\" shape=\"rect\">as he put it<\/a>, American aristocracy can be found \u201cat the bar or on the bench.\u201d\u00a0<a title=\"www.amazon.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0393331520\/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=thewaspos09-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=0393331520&amp;linkId=b05e2c714e57caba8a9914038bb404f4\" shape=\"rect\">Tocqueville saw<\/a>\u00a0that lawyers, with their sense of civic duty, created a \u201cform of public accountability that would help preserve the blessings of democracy without allowing its untrammeled vices.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;ve known many lawyers, and actually I consider just about every one of them admirable people. The American Experiment is not founded on religion or military might, it&#8217;s founded on respect for the law, and the lawyers are those who implement it in all its messy details.<\/p>\n<p>American contempt for lawyers is ill-founded and motivated by a few bad actors.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Or I should say allegedly odious profession, actually.
