{"id":1432,"date":"2015-06-30T16:30:51","date_gmt":"2015-06-30T21:30:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=1432"},"modified":"2015-07-14T17:42:48","modified_gmt":"2015-07-14T22:42:48","slug":"the-iran-deal-roundup-ctd-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/06\/30\/the-iran-deal-roundup-ctd-11\/","title":{"rendered":"The Iran Deal Roundup, Ctd"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/06\/25\/the-iran-deal-roundup-ctd-10\/\" target=\"_blank\">Iran negotiations<\/a> are going into the final lap, and <i><b>AL Monitor <\/b><\/i>is covering the issues.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.al-monitor.com\/pulse\/originals\/2015\/06\/reality-of-deal-sets-in-for-iran-p51.html\" target=\"_blank\">Laura Rozen reports<\/a> from Vienna:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe and the Iranians understand that this is a very important moment in the talks,\u201d a senior US\u00a0administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told journalists June 29.\u00a0\u201cIt is certainly possible to get a deal here, and we do see a path forward to get an agreement that meets our bottom line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut there are real and tough issues that remain which have to be resolved to get a comprehensive agreement, and we still don\u2019t know yet whether we will be able to get there,\u201d\u00a0the US\u00a0official said. \u201cWe want to, we hope, but we do not know.\u2019\u2019 &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Iranian politicians are struggling in recent weeks with how to reconcile the prospective nuclear deal with the Islamic Republic\u2019s revolutionary identity, said Adnan Tabatabai, a Berlin-based political analyst\u00a0of Iranian affairs.<\/p>\n<p>For Iran, \u201cthis is about more\u201d than a nuclear deal, Tabatabai told Al-Monitor on June 28. It can potentially make way for a new era in Iran\u2019s foreign policy, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the end, it goes back to the key principles of what the revolution is about,\u201d Tabatabai\u00a0said. \u201c\u2019Some say,\u00a0&#8216;We are an anti-imperialist revolutionary state. We are not willing to give in to the supreme powers.\u2019 They will have to say we made the six most powerful countries in the world acknowledge our right to enrichment, force them to accept that we maintain what we achieved; at the same time, they will have to say we remained the unshakeable one.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jullian Pecquet <a href=\"http:\/\/www.al-monitor.com\/pulse\/originals\/2015\/06\/critics-iran-deal-congress-pressure-negotiators.html\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> on American reactions:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Key players both on and off Capitol Hill are raising their voices in the hopes of preventing what they say would be unacceptable concessions. Their statements suggest that a final agreement may yet attract broad bipartisan support, even as more conservative groups are already actively seeking to kill any deal. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>United Against Nuclear Iran, under the presidency of former Obama administration arms control coordinator Gary Samore, for example has begun a multimillion TV and newspaper campaign ahead of the deadline. The nonprofit advocacy group is critical of past concessions on uranium enrichment and the easing of many restrictions after a decade but says it can get behind a final deal if it avoids further concessions. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The liberal Jewish organization J Street, for instance, has launched a <a href=\"http:\/\/jpupdates.com\/2015\/06\/23\/j-street-launches-website-to-counter-opposition-to-iran-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\">multimillion campaign<\/a>\u00a0that includes advertising, polling and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irandealfacts.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a>\u00a0dedicated to pushing back against what it calls \u201cmisinformation about the nuclear negotiations and the likely parameters of a deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, several conservative groups and publications, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stopthebadirandeal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Secure America Now<\/a>\u00a0and William Kristol\u2019s Weekly Standard, have reached the opposite conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe impending <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/articles\/iran-deal-then-and-now_978661.html?page=1\" target=\"_blank\">deal is an embarrassment<\/a>,\u201d the magazine concludes in its <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1827503252\"><span class=\"aQJ\">July 6<\/span><\/span> edition. \u201cThe world\u2019s\u00a0greatest power prostrate before the world\u2019s most patiently expansionist, terror-sponsoring, anti-American theocracy.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ali Hashem gives some insight into the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.al-monitor.com\/pulse\/originals\/2015\/06\/iran-nuclear-talks-deadline-vienna-sanctions.html\" target=\"_blank\">various participants<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In a negotiating room overseeing Theodor Hertzl Platz in the heart of Vienna, US and Iranian delegates sit facing each other;\u00a0sometimes they are joined by others from France, United Kingdom, Germany, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.al-monitor.com\/pulse\/originals\/2015\/03\/russia-iran-nuclear-zarif-negotiations-china.html\" target=\"_blank\">Russia\u00a0and China<\/a>. It\u2019s rare to hear a word from the Chinese, except when it comes to calling for more effort for a better solution; the Russians have been relatively inactive, and\u00a0along with China are silent observers. The UK is aligned with the US, while France sometimes plays the role of troublemaker. However,\u00a0this time around, France has been\u00a0relatively quiet; it\u2019s now\u00a0Germany that seems to have its own special view on what is taking place.
