A claim of a perjury trap is really a claim of prosecutorial misconduct. It refers to an abuse of the legal process, whereby a prosecutor subpoenas a witness to testify not for a legitimate investigative purpose but to try to catch him in an inconsistency or falsehood \u2014 even a relatively minor one \u2014 that can then trigger a perjury charge.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Because there&#8217;s not a doubt in the world that Trump is a witness to any possible wrong-doing, the term doesn&#8217;t apply. <em><strong>WaPo<\/strong><\/em> believes this is the motivation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Characterizing the president\u2019s interview as a potential perjury trap is simply wrong. But it is of a piece with <a title=\"www.washingtonpost.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/the-mounting-attacks-on-mueller-are-misguided-and-dangerous\/2017\/12\/10\/60e396ce-dde4-11e7-bbd0-9dfb2e37492a_story.html?utm_term=.2724e3647961\" shape=\"rect\">the broader effort<\/a> by the president and his political allies to discredit Mueller\u2019s investigation. It suggests \u2014 wrongly \u2014 that Mueller is treating the president unfairly.
