He grew tumour cells in a liquid spiked with cytokines, which are molecules that turn on a cell\u2019s MHC labels. Then he injected the cells into afflicted devils. Over time,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1038\/srep43827\">their tumours began to shrink<\/a>\u00a0and, in some cases, disappeared completely. \u201cIt\u2019s a bit odd, treating cancer with cancer,\u201d says Woods. Still, he can\u2019t argue with the striking results.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s fascinating. It suggests that the injected cells are telling the cancerous cells to turn on their <em><strong>MHCs<\/strong><\/em>, and then the immune system exterminates them.
