{"id":1360,"date":"2015-06-21T18:55:21","date_gmt":"2015-06-21T23:55:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=1360"},"modified":"2015-06-21T22:55:08","modified_gmt":"2015-06-22T03:55:08","slug":"clear-thinking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/06\/21\/clear-thinking\/","title":{"rendered":"Clear Thinking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The latest paper edition of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csicop.org\/si\/archive\/category\/volume_39.4\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Skeptical Inquirer<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (July\/August) publishes Prof. Terence Hines&#8217; review of <strong>The Horse That Won&#8217;t Go Away<\/strong>, by Thomas E. Heinzen, Scott O. Lilienfeld, and Susan A. Nolan.\u00a0 Two items caught my attention: first, that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Facilitated_communication\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Facilitated Communication<\/em><\/a> (<em>FC<\/em>) is still in use today, a fact that I find appalling &#8211; I remember it being debunked between 25 and 30 years ago, and (deep breath) in fact wrote a perfectly dreadful play concerning the dangers of <em>FC.<\/em>\u00a0 Prof. Hines summarizes the dangers mentioned in the book, including the facilitator can easily choose to level false charges of sexual abuse against the very parents who&#8217;ve requested their help &#8211; through their subject.\u00a0 This should deeply concern any parent of a child who cannot communicate.<\/p>\n<p>Second, some facts about drug-sniffing dogs:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Most surprising to me was the finding that drug- and explosive- sniffing dogs do\u00a0 very poorly in actual tests where their handlers don&#8217;t know where the target materials are or are thought to be.\u00a0 Although the authors agree that more research is needed, the fact that such dogs will &#8220;alert&#8221; when there&#8217;s nothing there is troubling.\u00a0 One study the authors describe showed that out of 10,000 alerts, there was a 74 percent false alarm rate.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That&#8217;s a very high false positive rate; combined with <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/06\/19\/perverse-incentives\/\" target=\"_blank\">civil forfeiture practices<\/a>, it&#8217;s more than troubling.\u00a0 The false negative rate is not mentioned in the review.<\/p>\n<p>Hines&#8217; judgment on the book?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It&#8217;s common to say that a book should be &#8220;required reading.&#8221;\u00a0 In my case, this won&#8217;t be just a cliche since I will be assigning this book in every psychology course I teach from now on.\u00a0 It is very well written.\u00a0 It is never boring or pedantic.\u00a0 It contains much excellent material for class discussion and written projects.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(updated with FC link to <em><strong>Wikipedia<\/strong><\/em>)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The latest paper edition of Skeptical Inquirer (July\/August) publishes Prof. Terence Hines&#8217; review of The Horse That Won&#8217;t Go Away, by Thomas E.
