In October, the commission denied Memphis a waiver\u00a0that would have allowed the city to remove the Confederate statues. The city was in the process of challenging the decision. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Focusing on the law\u2019s key phrase, protecting statues on \u201cpublic property,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.commercialappeal.com\/story\/news\/government\/city\/2017\/12\/20\/memphis-council-votes-immediately-remove-confederate-statues\/960707001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shelby County Commissioner Van Turner<\/a>\u00a0and others set up a private nonprofit corporation called Memphis Greenspace Inc.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, without fanfare, the City Council approved a measure authorizing the mayor to sell the two parks with the statues to the private group, for $1,000 each, which he promptly did.<\/p>\n<p>In the morning, they were on public property. By the afternoon, they weren\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>By nightfall, the parks with the statues had been sold to the newly minted nonprofit, which sent in the cranes. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>A cheering crowd sang as Davis was placed in the back of a truck at 10:45 p.m. and driven away. Among the songs, according to the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.commercialappeal.com\/story\/news\/government\/city\/2017\/12\/20\/memphis-council-votes-immediately-remove-confederate-statues\/960707001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Commercial Appeal<\/a>,\u00a0was that old standby: \u201cNa\u00a0na na na, na\u00a0na na na, hey, hey, goodbye.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/morning-mix\/wp\/2017\/12\/21\/memphis-to-jefferson-davis-na-na-na-na-hey-hey-goodbye\/?undefined=&amp;utm_term=.4b586c306611&amp;wpisrc=nl_most&amp;wpmm=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>WaPo<\/strong><\/em><\/a>]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Needless to say,\u00a0the Tennessee Division of the Sons were furious.
