{"id":13216,"date":"2017-12-07T13:56:22","date_gmt":"2017-12-07T19:56:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=13216"},"modified":"2017-12-07T13:56:22","modified_gmt":"2017-12-07T19:56:22","slug":"the-road-to-jerusalem-ctd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2017\/12\/07\/the-road-to-jerusalem-ctd\/","title":{"rendered":"The Road To Jerusalem, Ctd"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After writing <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2017\/12\/06\/the-road-to-jerusalem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last night&#8217;s post<\/a> concerning the recognition of Jerusalem as a possibly shrewd move by Trump, along comes <em><strong>WaPo<\/strong><\/em> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/trump-had-for-months-been-determined-to-move-us-embassy-to-jerusalem\/2017\/12\/06\/f721e2ba-dab7-11e7-b1a8-62589434a581_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">makes it clear<\/a> that he&#8217;s just trying to beat his predecessors &#8211; again. And without understanding what might happen:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Several advisers said [Trump] did not seem to have a full understanding of the issue and instead appeared to be focused on \u201cseeming pro-Israel,\u201d in the words of one, and \u201cmaking a deal,\u201d in the words of another.<\/p>\n<p>Once Trump indicated 10 days ago that he would not sign a second waiver, national security adviser H.R. McMaster began putting together options that officials assessed would result in the least damage.<\/p>\n<p>The debate came to a head at a\u00a0<a title=\"www.washingtonpost.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/inside-the-trump-administration-debate-over-declaring-jerusalem-to-be-israels-capital\/2017\/12\/01\/4a02852c-d6b5-11e7-95bf-df7c19270879_story.html?utm_term=.7ac2d0bdf68a\" shape=\"rect\">White House meeting<\/a>\u00a0Nov.\u00a027 to hash out the waiver issue. According to people briefed on the meeting, Trump repeated his earlier assertions that he had to follow through on his campaign pledge, seemingly irritated by objections over security and the break with previous policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decision wasn\u2019t driven by the peace process,\u201d one senior official said. \u201cThe decision was driven by his campaign promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chief regional allies including Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Egypt \u2014 where senior government officials have said they still have little sense of the parameters of the broader peace plan being fashioned by the Kushner-led team \u2014 were not told definitively that the decision had been made until late last week. All have described the Jerusalem decision as a step backward in the peace process.<\/p>\n<p>When Trump made contact with Arab allies ahead of his announcement, it was to notify them, not to discuss the matter.<\/p>\n<p>According to Nabil Shaath, an adviser to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, Trump \u201cjust went on saying he had to do it,\u201d despite the Palestinian leader\u2019s fervent objections.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ah, well.
