Buddy Roemer (R)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Archives\/1991\/10\/31\/Roemer-throws-support-to-Edwin-Edwards-blasts-David-Duke\/9763688885200\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">officially endorsed<\/a>\u00a0the Democratic nominee, Edwin Edwards.<\/p>\n<p>This wasn\u2019t easy \u2013 Roemer had previously taken an \u201cAnyone But Edwards\u201d posture \u2013 but when the Republican nominee was considered outrageously unacceptable, it made sense to announce support for the rival candidate.<\/p>\n<p>Edwards was burdened by a series of corruption allegations at the time, leading to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/vote-for-the-crook-its-important-edwin-edwards-wants-back-in-congress\" rel=\"nofollow\">a famous bumper-sticker campaign<\/a>: \u201cVote for the crook, it\u2019s important.\u201d (Edwards ultimately defeated Duke by 22 points.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It might be embarrassing, but it&#8217;s a unique bumper sticker.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From Steve Benen on Maddowblog: In 1991, former KKK leader David Duke won a Republican gubernatorial primary, and GOP officials from across the country wanted nothing to do with him.
