Ossicones<\/b>\u00a0are\u00a0horn<\/a>-like (or\u00a0antler<\/a>-like) protuberances on the heads of\u00a0giraffes<\/a>, male\u00a0okapis<\/a>, and their extinct relatives, such as\u00a0Sivatherium<\/a><\/i>, and the\u00a0climacoceratids<\/a>, such as\u00a0Climacoceras<\/a><\/i>.[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The base that a deer’s antlers grow from is very similar to an ossicone.<\/p>\n

Ossicones are similar to the horns of\u00a0antelopes<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0cattle<\/a>, save that they are derived from ossified\u00a0cartilage<\/a>\u00a0rather than living bone,[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and that the ossicones remain covered in\u00a0skin<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0fur<\/a>, rather than horny\u00a0keratin<\/a>.\u00a0Antlers<\/a>\u00a0(such as on\u00a0deer<\/a>) are derived from bone tissue: when mature, the skin and fur covering of the antlers, termed “velvet,” is sloughed and scraped off to expose the bone of the antlers.
