{"id":12647,"date":"2017-10-25T11:25:27","date_gmt":"2017-10-25T16:25:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=12647"},"modified":"2017-10-25T11:25:27","modified_gmt":"2017-10-25T16:25:27","slug":"fun-with-strange-materials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2017\/10\/25\/fun-with-strange-materials\/","title":{"rendered":"Fun With Strange Materials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The hotter it gets, the cooler you are. <em><strong>NewScientist<\/strong><\/em> (14 October 2017) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg23631471-700-lightconverting-paint-turns-the-sun-into-the-ultimate-air-conditioner\/\">reports<\/a> on a new house paint:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The paint the team came up with has an outer layer that filters out some of the sun\u2019s rays and an inner one that absorbs heat and emits higher-frequency light, cooling itself below the ambient temperature.<\/p>\n<p>The material has passed tests in the lab. \u201cHeat could be absorbed and re-emitted as light,\u201d Shenhav says. \u201cAs long as the sun is shining on it, it would be continuously cooled.\u201d Simulations show that a room on the top floor of a house will feel up to 10\u00b0C cooler with the paint applied to the roof than without it. The team now plans to conduct pilot tests on buildings within two years.<\/p>\n<p>Although existing cooling paints are used to scatter and reduce the amount of heat buildings absorb, they can\u2019t actively lower the temperature inside. SolCold\u2019s paint can, says Eran Zahavy at the Israel Institute of Biological Research. But it isn\u2019t cheap, costing about $300 to coat 100 square metres. Shenhav and his team think the early adopters will be shopping malls and stadiums.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A fascinating material.
