They ignore their failures, and just repeat their mantras. Bah. I wonder if the people of Kansas will bother to notice.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at what we can know, which is the results of surveys.\u00a0 Governor Brownback, former Senator for Kansas, was elected in 2010, winning a four way race with 63% of the vote, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Sam_Brownback#2010\" target=\"_blank\">Ballotpedia<\/a>.\u00a0 At the time, <em><strong>cjonline.com<\/strong><\/em> (Topeka Capital-Journal) <a href=\"http:\/\/cjonline.com\/news\/local\/2010-12-18\/kansas_2010_sam_brownback\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Immediate priorities in the Statehouse will be cutting state taxes and regulations in an effort to spur private-sector job growth, Brownback said. He vowed to reduce state government spending.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My vision for Kansas is to see our economy grow so we will be able to fund the state&#8217;s core services,&#8221; he said. &#8220;My economic growth team and I are working hard to develop a balanced budget and tax plan, which will release the entrepreneurial spirit of Kansans and create the economic environment necessary for Kansas to become more globally competitive.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Taking his vote percentage as an approval rating is probably a dubious practice, but it&#8217;s indicative of his dominance (second place had 32%).\u00a0 What happened in the 2014 election?\u00a0 Again, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Sam_Brownback#2014\" target=\"_blank\">Ballotpedia<\/a>, this time he won <strong><em>49.8% to 46.1%<\/em><\/strong>, with a libertarian candidate taking the rest.\u00a0 His approval rating in 2011,\u00a0 according to local news station <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.kwch.com\/2013-10-23\/approval-rating_43333397\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>KWCH<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, was 51%, but in 2013 fell to 35% ; during the 2014 race, polling seemed to show he was frequently behind his opponent, to the extent that his campaign protested the <em><strong>cjonline.com<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/cjonline.com\/news\/state\/2014-08-28\/brownback-campaign-surveyusas-poll-absurd-firm-stands-findings\" target=\"_blank\">poll<\/a>, conducted by SurveyUSA:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the midst of a challenging re-election campaign in 2014, Brownback&#8217;s staff now takes a disparaging view of SurveyUSA&#8217;s capacity to sample the public&#8217;s political pulse. The Clifton, N.J., company&#8217;s latest poll in Kansas&#8217; race for governor, revealed Tuesday, had Democrat Paul Davis leading 48 percent to 40 percent for Brownback.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;SurveyUSA has a history of inaccurate polling,&#8221;\u00a0said John Milburn, a spokesman for the governor and former Associated Press reporter who covered Brownback and other Kansas politicians for more than a decade. &#8220;This latest release from the organization is more of the same.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Brownback campaign manager Mark Dugan, who worked for Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer, discounted SurveyUSA&#8217;s work product as &#8220;another absurd poll showing the governor losing.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Was the polling inaccurate?\u00a0 Biased?\u00a0 <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/one-day-left-the-most-competitive-races-for-governor\/\" target=\"_blank\">FiveThirtyEight<\/a><\/strong><\/em> had forecast Brownback to lose &#8211; big:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Republican Gov. Sam Brownback is in trouble for three related reasons: a Republican party split, economic woes and education. For as long as most of us have been alive, Kansas has <a href=\"http:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/the-end-of-a-kansas-tradition-moderation\/\" target=\"_blank\">leaned to the right<\/a>, practicing its own brand of moderate Republicanism. Brownback, though, has governed as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/in-kansas-gov-brownbacks-reelection-race-is-case-study-in-republican-party-shift\/2014\/07\/30\/3192d86c-1420-11e4-8936-26932bcfd6ed_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">pure conservative<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It has hurt him; Democrat Paul Davis has been endorsed by <a href=\"http:\/\/ksn.com\/2014\/07\/15\/live-video-paul-davis-campaign-announcement\/\" target=\"_blank\">scores of moderate Republicans<\/a> upset <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kansascity.com\/opinion\/editorials\/article1236373.html\" target=\"_blank\">by cuts to education<\/a> necessitated by Brownback\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ljworld.com\/news\/2012\/jun\/19\/brownback-gets-heat-real-live-experiment-comment-t\/\" target=\"_blank\">large tax cuts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ksn.com\/2014\/10\/28\/ksn-news-poll-results-oct-28-2014\/\" target=\"_blank\">According to SurveyUSA<\/a>, taxes and education remain among the most important issues to voters in 2014. The result has been disenchanted Republicans. The share of registered Republicans in Kansas was 9 percentage points higher than the share of <em>self-identified<\/em> Republicans, according the latest <a href=\"http:\/\/maristpoll.marist.edu\/wp-content\/misc\/KSpolls\/KS141018\/Complete%20October%2026,%202014%20Kansas%20NBC%20News__Marist%20Poll%20Tables.pdf#page=2\" target=\"_blank\">Marist College poll<\/a>. Many of these Republicans now identify as independent, a group Davis is winning by a 26-point margin.<\/p>\n<p>Although polls have narrowed from a few months ago, most surveys have Davis riding Republican discontent to a lead. He\u2019s an 82 percent favorite.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, they do not appear to have conducted any polls of their own, just relied on others.\u00a0 I found this courtesy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.westernjournalism.com\/heres-kansas-flourishing-republican-governor-sam-brownback\/2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kevin Waisfeld<\/a>, who goes on to enjoy a bit of schadenfreude.<\/p>\n<p>So, back to the original question: do people learn?\u00a0 I think they do.\u00a0 Not enough, in this case; or perhaps they decided to accept the Governor&#8217;s assertion that he just needs more time.\u00a0 That might be understandable, although in four years a lot of damage can be done.\u00a0 But I think that electing a governor involves issues that are close to home: highways and education.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s be honest: even WAR seems far away and irrelevant if you don&#8217;t have family members in the service &#8211; and there&#8217;s no draft to spread fear and discontent amongst the eligible; foreign policy?\u00a0 For wonks.\u00a0 Social Security and MediCare &#8211; hardly anyone touches those any more, and if they do they get to retire.<\/p>\n<p>But when it&#8217;s close up and personal, then people do learn.\u00a0 Which, of course, doesn&#8217;t really explain the Minnesota experience of an improved economy resulting in the Democrats losing the state House of Representatives.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A FB correspondent remarks: The trouble is, presenting facts doesn&#8217;t work.
