{"id":1227,"date":"2015-07-03T19:54:15","date_gmt":"2015-07-04T00:54:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=1227"},"modified":"2015-07-03T19:54:39","modified_gmt":"2015-07-04T00:54:39","slug":"the-withering-middle-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/07\/03\/the-withering-middle-class\/","title":{"rendered":"The Withering Middle Class"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epi.org\">Economic Policy Institute<\/a>\u00a0has estimated if the middle class had increased their incomes at the same rate the last several decades as the top 1% have, the average middle class family would be making <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-if-the-middle-class-kept-up-with-the-top-1-percent\/\">$156,000 a year<\/a>. \u00a0Instead, the average is currently $72,036.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>(EPI defines the<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/interactive\/economy\/middle-class-calculator\/?iid=EL\">\u00a0middle class<\/a>\u00a0as those in the nation&#8217;s 20% to 80% income range, and used data through 2011. It uses Congressional Budget Office data, which includes gains from investments, as well as certain public assistance and employer health insurance.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This probably comes as no surprise to people who have been paying attention, even if the Economic Policy Institute is somewhat left-leaning. \u00a0There&#8217;s no doubt most middle class workers&#8217; salaries have remained mostly flat for the past 20 years or so. \u00a0Meanwhile, the 1% have seen gains like few times in history.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/150630192042-chart-middle-class-keeping-up-780x439.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1448\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/150630192042-chart-middle-class-keeping-up-780x439.jpg?resize=707%2C398&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"150630192042-chart-middle-class-keeping-up-780x439\" width=\"707\" height=\"398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/150630192042-chart-middle-class-keeping-up-780x439.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/150630192042-chart-middle-class-keeping-up-780x439.jpg?resize=250%2C141&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/150630192042-chart-middle-class-keeping-up-780x439.jpg?resize=150%2C84&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/150630192042-chart-middle-class-keeping-up-780x439.jpg?resize=780%2C439&amp;ssl=1 780w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 707px) 100vw, 707px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re in the 1%, you might not see a problem, other than perhaps having to listen to lots of whining from the middle class. \u00a0But when productivity increases tremendously as it has, but the middle class don&#8217;t enjoy any additional benefits from the improved results of their labor, problems ensue. \u00a0And those problems are bad for the 1% as well.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s somewhat obvious problems. \u00a0One is that the demand for social support nets become greater. \u00a0If you&#8217;re a 1% right-wing voter, you might be inclined to attempt to cut government support for those social programs, so that at least you don&#8217;t have to pay more taxes to support them.<\/p>\n<p>A crashing middle class also means a crashing market for goods and services sold to the middle class. \u00a0While multi-national corporations may weather such a problem in one country such as the USA, with an economy as large as ours, these problems tend to spread. \u00a0And not every business can be a large multi-national.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly with other problems. \u00a0There may be no immediate repercussions to your feudally wealthy lifestyle. \u00a0But some day the bill always comes due. \u00a0Violent ends and insurrections result. \u00a0&#8220;Let them eat cake&#8221; has never been a successful policy.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I posit, as have many others, that what&#8217;s good for the middle class is good for the country and is good for the 1% as well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Economic Policy Institute\u00a0has estimated if the middle class had increased their incomes at the same rate the last several decades as the top 1% have, the average middle class family would be making $156,000 a year. \u00a0Instead, the average is currently $72,036.
