For example, if the abundance of large\u00a0<a title=\"Piscivore\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Piscivore\">piscivorous<\/a>\u00a0fish is increased in a\u00a0<a title=\"Lake\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lake\">lake<\/a>, the abundance of their prey, smaller fish that eat\u00a0<a title=\"Zooplankton\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zooplankton\">zooplankton<\/a>, should decrease. The resulting increase in zooplankton should, in turn, cause the\u00a0<a title=\"Biomass (ecology)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biomass_(ecology)\">biomass<\/a>\u00a0of its prey,\u00a0<a title=\"Phytoplankton\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phytoplankton\">phytoplankton<\/a>, to decrease.<\/p>\n<p>The trophic cascade is an\u00a0<a title=\"Ecology\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ecology\">ecological concept<\/a>\u00a0which has stimulated new research in many areas of ecology.
