{"id":1215,"date":"2015-06-04T18:41:54","date_gmt":"2015-06-04T23:41:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=1215"},"modified":"2015-06-04T18:41:54","modified_gmt":"2015-06-04T23:41:54","slug":"the-iran-deal-roundup-ctd-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/06\/04\/the-iran-deal-roundup-ctd-6\/","title":{"rendered":"The Iran Deal Roundup, Ctd"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/06\/02\/the-iran-deal-roundup-ctd-5\/\" target=\"_blank\">continues<\/a> their political push <a href=\"http:\/\/www.al-monitor.com\/pulse\/originals\/2015\/06\/irgc-letter-rouhani-negotiations.html\" target=\"_blank\">against the deal<\/a>, reports <em><strong>AL Monitor<\/strong><\/em>&#8216;s Arash Karami.\u00a0 The faculty of a University allied with the IRGC has issued a couple of statements:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The letter accused some officials of advocating a policy that \u201cis opposed to the fundamental principles of Imam [Khomeini] in foreign policy\u201d and ignores \u201cthe daily crimes of Israel, America and Saudi Arabia.\u201d The letter rejected that a hard-line foreign policy would allow the West to create an image of Iran seeking war or would increase Iran\u00a0phobia in the West. Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has on various occasions criticized the Mahmoud Ahmadinejad administration for its harsh rhetoric, blaming him for increasing Iran\u2019s international isolation and adding to a negative world image of Iranians. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The letter warned officials that \u201cbefore it\u2019s too late, to return to the real path of the people\u201d and those who don\u2019t \u201care not far away from the eyes\u201d of the IRGC. The rare letter and its harsh language has surprised many, especially since it came one week after an\u00a0Imam\u00a0Hussein University\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ihu.ac.ir\/?q=fa\/news\/%D8%A8%DB%8C%D8%A7%D9%86%DB%8C%D9%87-%D8%AF%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%B4%DA%AF%D8%A7%D9%87-%D8%A7%D9%85%D8%A7%D9%85-%D8%AD%D8%B3%DB%8C%D9%86-%D8%B9-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%AA%D8%A8%DB%8C%DB%8C%D9%86-%D8%A8%DB%8C%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%A7%D9%85%D8%A7%D9%85-%D8%AE%D8%A7%D9%85%D9%86%D9%87-%D8%A7%DB%8C\" target=\"_blank\">public relations\u00a0statement<\/a>\u00a0May 24 that expressed support for Khamenei\u2019s May 20 comments at the university about refusing inspection of military sites or to allow Iran\u2019s nuclear scientists to be interviewed as part of a comprehensive nuclear deal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><strong>The National Council of Resistance<\/strong><\/em> of Iran <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/nuclear\/18403-iran-molten-lead-will-be-poured-down-throat-of-nuclear-inspectors-irgc-commander-says\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>IRGC Brigadier General Gholamhossein Qeybparavar, the commander of IRGC forces in the Fars province said on Saturday: \u201cYou would be wrong to dare to want to inspect our military centers and whoever does look at IRGC centers we will fill his throat with molten lead.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <em><strong>Christian Science Monitor<\/strong><\/em> has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/World\/Middle-East\/2015\/0603\/Why-Iran-s-Revolutionary-Guard-backs-a-nuclear-deal-It-s-just-business\" target=\"_blank\">different view, though<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI think under the surface a lot of the different businessmen who are connected to the [IRGC] are putting pressure on Rouhani and his team to make sure these [nuclear] deals go through, because it\u2019s hurting their pockets very deeply,\u201d says Narges Bajoghli, a PhD candidate at New York University who interviewed some 150 members of the Guard and affiliated Basij militia over nine years of research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, they have an interest in making themselves seem like a very strict organization, but I think when you go into the belly of the whole thing, you realize it\u2019s not like that, especially since they\u2019ve been involved in business,\u201d says Ms. Bajoghli.<\/p>\n<p>While hard-line Iranian politicians oppose any nuclear deal that requires compromise, and dislike even talking to the US and Western powers, whom they accuse of seeking regime change, the IRGC top brass in early April publicly backed the nuclear talks like never before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUp until today the nuclear negotiation team have defended the Iranian nation\u2019s rights well, and the nation and IRGC is grateful for their honest efforts,\u201d said IRGC commander Mohammad Ali Jafari.<\/p>\n<p>But the support came with a dose of tough talk. This period of negotiations was a definitive year for Iran, Maj. Gen. Jafari said, and \u201cthe enemy\u201d \u2013 the United States \u2013 was \u201cwrongly thinking\u201d it could change Iran\u2019s behavior through talks and sanctions. Lifting all sanctions was the main demand of the talks, he said, in addition to preserving Iran\u2019s right to uranium enrichment and nuclear development.<\/p>\n<p>However analysts say the IRGC is far from monolithic, and that its own confrontational rhetoric often masks a pragmatic side.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So does <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lobelog.com\/why-irans-revolutionary-guard-supports-the-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>LobeLog<\/strong><\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In over nine years of on-the-ground research with different factions of the Revolutionary Guard and Basij, I have found that an underlying concern for many, regardless of political leaning, is a desire to create an Iran with more opportunities for their children, and that means the removal of sanctions and better relations with the world.<\/p>\n<p>After the 2009 crackdown in Iran, I interviewed over 150 members of the Revolutionary Guard and Basij. Seventy-five percent of those I interviewed vehemently disagreed with the conservative turn in Iranian politics during the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
