{"id":1180,"date":"2015-06-01T20:07:49","date_gmt":"2015-06-02T01:07:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=1180"},"modified":"2015-06-01T20:07:49","modified_gmt":"2015-06-02T01:07:49","slug":"is-north-carolina-the-most-toxic-state-in-the-union-ctd-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/06\/01\/is-north-carolina-the-most-toxic-state-in-the-union-ctd-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Is North Carolina the most Toxic State in the Union?, Ctd"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Continuing this <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/05\/27\/is-north-carolina-the-most-toxic-state-in-the-union-ctd-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">topic<\/a>, North Carolina legislators discover that business will, indeed, pay attention to legislation which appears to ignore scientific realities, as Sami Grover on <i><b>Treehugger.com <\/b><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.treehugger.com\/corporate-responsibility\/apple-facebook-google-warn-nc-not-freeze-renewables.html\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p>As I <a href=\"http:\/\/ncsustainabilitycenter.org\/business\/apple-google-facebook-warn-against-nc-renewable-energy-freeze\" target=\"_blank\">wrote last week over at North Carolina Sustainability Connection<\/a>, Apple, Google and Facebook have jointly signed <a href=\"http:\/\/c.ymcdn.com\/sites\/energync.site-ym.com\/resource\/resmgr\/legislative\/TechNet_NC_H322_Letter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">a letter warning North Carolina&#8217;s legislators not to mess with the state&#8217;s popular Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard<\/a> (REPS).<\/p>\n<p>The standard, as it currently reads, requires utilities to purchase renewable energy amounting to 6 percent of retail sales, with that mandate set to increase to 10 percent by 2018. House bill 332 (H332), which would freeze the mandate at 6 percent, recently made its way through the Senate Commerce Committee after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsobserver.com\/news\/politics-government\/politics-columns-blogs\/under-the-dome\/article21491055.html\" target=\"_blank\">a highly questionable and contentious voice vote<\/a> that even some Republicans decried as being &#8220;not even close&#8221;. (Similar language in other bills has failed to move forward several times.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So who&#8217;s pushing this along?\u00a0 At least two Republicans; in the NC House, Rep. Mike Hager, and in the NC Senate, Senate finance chairman Sen.
