The\u00a0sumptuary laws<\/b>\u00a0(from\u00a0Latin<\/a>\u00a0sumptu\u0101riae l\u0113g\u0113s<\/i>) are\u00a0laws<\/a>\u00a0that attempted to regulate consumption;\u00a0Black’s Law Dictionary<\/a><\/i>\u00a0defines them as “Laws made for the purpose of restraining luxury or extravagance, particularly against inordinate expenditures in the matter of apparel, food, furniture, etc.”[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Historically, they were laws that were intended to regulate and reinforce\u00a0social hierarchies<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0morals<\/a>\u00a0through restrictions, often depending upon a person’s social rank, on their permitted clothing, food, and luxury expenditures.
