The quagmire enveloping the Trump Administration due to its behavior during the campaign is indicative of what happens when you&#8217;re ethically challenged. But how about other examples? <i><b>Lawfare<\/b><\/i>&#8216;s Quinta Jurecic, in the midst of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawfareblog.com\/wall-begins-crumble-notes-collusion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.lawfareblog.com\/wall-begins-crumble-notes-collusion&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1499899070872000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHTd_mNFV9jt5SePEh7xvtwNR6-xw\">analyzing <\/a>how badly the Trump&#8217;s defensive wall is crumbling, provides this contrasing example from the Gore campaign of 2000, which I don&#8217;t recall reading about before:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"gmail_quote\"><p>How unusual is it? On September 14, 2000, former congressman Tom Downey, a close advisor to Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2000\/09\/14\/us\/the-2000-campaign-the-debate-gore-aide-receives-then-lets-go-of-hot-potato.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2000\/09\/14\/us\/the-2000-campaign-the-debate-gore-aide-receives-then-lets-go-of-hot-potato.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1499899070873000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHYhra8nWQIjiCaZt-yXbEMH1zJCQ\">received<\/a> an anonymous package in the mail <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2001\/03\/07\/us\/ex-aide-to-media-firm-is-charged-in-theft-of-bush-debate-tape.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2001\/03\/07\/us\/ex-aide-to-media-firm-is-charged-in-theft-of-bush-debate-tape.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1499899070873000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHnVl4oxnXvYEykIjYyzFTEJUVCew\">containing<\/a> a videotape of George W. Bush practicing for the upcoming presidential debates and more than 120 pages of planned debate strategies. Downey and his lawyer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2001\/03\/07\/us\/ex-aide-to-media-firm-is-charged-in-theft-of-bush-debate-tape.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2001\/03\/07\/us\/ex-aide-to-media-firm-is-charged-in-theft-of-bush-debate-tape.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1499899070873000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHnVl4oxnXvYEykIjYyzFTEJUVCew\">contacted<\/a> the FBI and handed the cache over that very day, and Gore campaign officials then immediately reached out to the Associated Press to provide a timeline of the events. The Gore campaign had no hint of who had sent the materials\u2014nothing indicated the involvement of a foreign power; indeed, the package was eventually traced to a low-level employee at a media firm. But the materials were on their face likely provided to the Gore campaign as part of an attempt to damage Gore\u2019s opponent, and that was enough to prompt a call to authorities.<\/p>\n<p>The rightness of the Gore officials\u2019\u00a0course of action is in no way diminished by the fact that, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2000\/09\/14\/us\/the-2000-campaign-the-debate-gore-aide-receives-then-lets-go-of-hot-potato.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2000\/09\/14\/us\/the-2000-campaign-the-debate-gore-aide-receives-then-lets-go-of-hot-potato.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1499899070873000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHYhra8nWQIjiCaZt-yXbEMH1zJCQ\">suggested<\/a> at the time, they were probably in part motivated by the desire to avoid the accusations of ill-gotten advantage that had rocked the Reagan administration. A couple years after the fact, it had been revealed that the Reagan campaign had obtained secret briefing materials on then-President Jimmy Carter\u2019s debate strategy in the run-up to the 1980 election; those revelations in turn triggered long-running congressional and Justice Department <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1984\/06\/18\/us\/campaign-papers-remain-a-mystery.html?pagewanted=all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1984\/06\/18\/us\/campaign-papers-remain-a-mystery.html?pagewanted%3Dall&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1499899070873000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHkkUVDu-gniO7T3diWtLNN0XH7Ag\">investigations<\/a>. Those investigations\u2014which eventually ended in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2009\/10\/new-book-pins-debategate-on-dem-028317\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2009\/10\/new-book-pins-debategate-on-dem-028317&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1499899070873000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFRvXH4UbBw4w5R3_-ke8gQDoxxaQ\">whimper<\/a>\u2014raised questions about whether and what kind of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1984\/06\/18\/us\/campaign-papers-remain-a-mystery.html?pagewanted=all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1984\/06\/18\/us\/campaign-papers-remain-a-mystery.html?pagewanted%3Dall&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1499899070873000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHkkUVDu-gniO7T3diWtLNN0XH7Ag\">crime<\/a> had been committed, but note that the Justice Department <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1984\/06\/18\/us\/campaign-papers-remain-a-mystery.html?pagewanted=all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1984\/06\/18\/us\/campaign-papers-remain-a-mystery.html?pagewanted%3Dall&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1499899070873000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHkkUVDu-gniO7T3diWtLNN0XH7Ag\">concluded<\/a> at the time that there was &#8221;no criminal intent of any kind\u201d and \u201cno criminal wrongdoing\u201d committed in connection with the transfer of the materials. This scandal too did not involve any indication of involvement by a hostile foreign power or its intelligence services.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Contrast with the most <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/russia-scandal-grows-team-trump-faces-crisis-credibility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent travails<\/a> of Trump, Jr. Or, for that matter, the Bush Administration&#8217;s insistence of WMDs in Iraq &#8211; which turned out to be untrue, but permitted the execution of a War which should not have been pursued.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Benen sees the continual crisis that is the Trump Administration progressing to the next step &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/pence-takes-steps-blaze-his-own-non-trump-trail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">where it&#8217;s everyone for themselves<\/a>.
