The term comes from the word <i>shun<\/i>, meaning &#8220;to avoid&#8221;, and <i>pike<\/i>, a term referring to <a title=\"Toll road\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toll_road\">turnpikes<\/a>, which is another name for toll roads.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shunpiking#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> People who often avoid toll roads sometimes call themselves shunpikers. Historically, certain paths around tollbooths came to be so well-known they were called &#8220;shun-pikes&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shunpiking#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Shunpiking has also come to mean an avoidance of major highways (regardless of tolls) in preference for bucolic and scenic interludes along lightly traveled country roads.
